Book Description
The sixty-six papers contained in this volume have been divided into four main chapters. Resource Mapping and Geophysical Surveys using Space Technology features four main areas. Firstly, the potentiality of MAGSAT data reduction to allocate crustal anomaly; secondly, the application of geophysical and geochemical data for mineral exploration; thirdly, the application of gamma-ray survey to locate the source of radioactive materials and lastly the importance of ground truths obtained by conventional geophysical surveys in the interpretation of satellite data. The chapter on Ice and Cloud Motions deduced from Satellite Imagery is in two sections, Cloud Winds - Methods and Accuracies and Ice Motion - Methods and Accuracies. Chapter 3 entitled Weather Analysis and Forecasting-Nowcasting to Extended Range Predictions focusses on the current status and future use of satellite observations in weather analysis and forecasting. Global weather predictions are expected to improve due to improved satellite observations and from the inclusion of small-scale physics supported by finer space and time resolution of the numerical models.

Book Description
Ultraviolet Astronomy and the Quest for the Origin of Life addresses the use of astronomical observations in the ultraviolet range to better understand the generation of complex, life-precursor molecules. The origin of RNA is still under debate but seems to be related to the generation of pools of complex organic molecules submitted to heavy cycles of solution in water and drying. This book investigates whether these cycles require a planetary surface or may occur in space by examining both the theoretical and observational aspects of the role of UV radiation in the origin of life. This book offers the latest advances in these studies for astronomers, astrobiologists and planetary scientists. - Addresses both the theoretical and observational aspects of the role of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the origin of life - Builds on the requirements to produce prebiotic molecules in space and the implications for the origin of RNA - Investigates the use of ultraviolet observations related to planetary system formation, the evolution of young planetary disks, and the interaction of stars with planetary atmospheres

Book Description
Hardbound. The symposium consisted of 75 invited and contributed presentations about controversial and poorly understood phenomena related to the plasma environments of comets, weakly magnetized and non-magnetized solar system bodies with significant atmospheres. Understanding of the major physical and chemical processes controlling cometary plasma environments has greatly improved following the historic spacecraft encounters with comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner. Pioneer Venus has provided detailed information about the plasma environment of Venus over a full solar cycle. The Phobos mission has also significantly enhanced our understanding of the Martian magnetosphere and its solar wind interaction. There is renewed interest in the solar wind interaction with our Moon and efforts are continuing toward further exploration of the plasma environments of Io, Titan and Triton. Although these bodies have vastly different plasma environments, there are severa

Book Description
Ring Current Investigations offers a comprehensive description of ring current dynamics in the Earth's magnetosphere as part of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. In order to help researchers develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics of geomagnetic storms, it includes a detailed description of energetic charged particles injection, trapping, and loss. It reviews historical and recent advances in observations, measurements, theory and simulations of the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere and other surrounding plasma populations. In addition, it compares the physics of ring currents at other strongly magnetized planets in the solar system, specifically Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, with the ring current system at Earth. Providing a description of the most important space weather effects driven by inner magnetospheric energetic particles during geomagnetic storms and present capabilities for their nowcast and forecast, Ring Current Investigations is an important reference for researchers in geophysics and space science, especially related to plasma physics, the ionosphere and magnetosphere, solar-terrestrial relations, and spacecraft anomalies. - Includes an appendix with links to downloadable video clips, illustrating features of ring current and geomagnetic storm dynamics - Provides overview of existing state-of-the-art numerical models and links for open-source code downloads - Offers guidance on how to develop numerical models within the context of the present-day understanding
