Book Description
"Increasing attention has been paid in recent years to the problem of electron interactions in solids because of their significant effects on various physical properties of solids, as for example the transport properties and the electronic specific heat. The problem has been idealized to an interacting electron gas imbedded in a uniform background of positive charge, the lattice of positive ions. The whole system is then neutral. For most metals this is fairly representative of the actual situation. As early as 1934, Wigner suggested the importance of the "correlation energy", a term introduced by him." --

Book Description
In addition to this, the author describes the effect of a superstrong magnetic field on the beta-decay type neutrino emissivity of neutron stars and on the chemical equilibrium of neutron, proton and electron gases in the neutron star core. The book also contains a full discussion of the behaviour of the anomalous magnetic moment in external magnetic fields for the electroweak theory. This important book will prove invaluable to anyone pursuing research in theoretical and high-energy physics, and could also be of interest to astrophysicists.

Book Description
The 1986 Advanced Study Institute on "The Physics of the two-Dimen sional Electron Gas" took place at the Conference Centre liTer Helme", close to Oostende (Belgium), from June 2 till 16, 1986. We were motivated to organize this Advanced Study Institute in view of the recent experimental and theoretical progress in the study of the two-dimensional electron gas. An additional motivation was our own theore tical interest in cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems at our institute. It is my pleasure to thank several instances and people who made this Advanced Study Institute possible. First of all, the sponsor of the Advanced Study Institute, the NATO Scientific Committee. Furthermore, the co sponsors: Agfa Gevaert, Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. N.V., Burroughs Belgium. Control Data. Digital Equipment Corporation, Esso Belgium. European Research Office (USA). Kredietbank. National Science Foundation (USA). Special thanks are due to the members of the Program Committee and the members of the Organizing Committee. I would also like to thank Mrs. H. Evans for typing assistance.

Book Description
An investigation was carried out on the dynamics of electrons in an electric and magnetic field. The density of states operator was applied to two models. The problem of a free electron in an electric and the problem of a harmonic oscillator are treated with the potential energy as a perturbation. These two problems can be considered as good models for a solid in an electric and magnetic field correspondingly. An interesting result was obtained for the motion of an electron in a crystal in the presence of an electric field. The energy uncertainty was calculated for the most general one-band wave packet. It was shown that this energy uncertainty is at least on the order of the Stark ladder spacing eEa. For the Bloch electron in a magnetic field the kq-representation was applied for investigating the symmetry properties of the problem. (Author).

Book Description
Although there are many books published in solid state physics, there is a wide gap between the active field of research and the conceptstraditionally taught in solid state courses. This book fills that gap. The style is tutorial, simple, and completely self-contained. Solid State Physicsexplains to readers the newest advances in the area of condensed matter physics with rigorous, but lucid mathematics. Examples are an integral part of the text, and they are carefully designed to apply the fundamental principles illustrated in the text to currently active topics of research. - Bridges the gap between fundamental principles and active fields of reserch, including explanations of all the latest advances - Provides an in-depth treatment of current research topics - Examples are integral to the text and apply fundamental principles to current topics of research - Both authors have many years of experience of teaching at a variety of levels--undergraduate, post-graduate, tutorial workshops and seminars

Book Description
The first Nato Advanced Studies Institute entirely devoted to density functional theory was held in Portugal in September 1983. The proceedings of this School, publis hed in early 1985, is still used as a standard reference covering the basic development of the theory and applications in atomic, molecular, solid state and nuclear physics. Ho wever, astonishing progress has been achieved in the intervening years: The foundations of the theory have been extended to cover excited states and time dependent problems more fully, density functional theory of classical liquids and superconducting systems has been addressed and extensions to relativistic, that is, field theoretical systems, as well as a more thorough discussion of magnetic field problems have been presented. In addition, new functionals have been devised, for instance under the heading of ge neralised gradient expansions, and the number of applications in the traditional fields has steadily increased, in particular in chemistry. Applications in new fields, as for instance the structure of atomic clusters and the marriage of density functional theory with molecular dynamics and simulated annealing, have provided additional impetus to the field of density functional theory.
