Book Description
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) are responsible for protecting species that are listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and for protecting habitats that are critical for their survival. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for registering or reregistering pesticides under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and must ensure that pesticide use does not cause any unreasonable adverse effects on the environment, which is interpreted to include listed species and their critical habitats. The agencies have developed their own approaches to evaluating environmental risk, and their approaches differ because their legal mandates, responsibilities, institutional cultures, and expertise differ. Over the years, the agencies have tried to resolve their differences but have been unsuccessful in reaching a consensus regarding their assessment approaches. As a result, FWS, NMFS, EPA, and the US Department of Agriculture asked the National Research Council (NRC) to examine scientific and technical issues related to determining risks posed to listed species by pesticides. Specifically, the NRC was asked to evaluate methods for identifying the best scientific data available; to evaluate approaches for developing modeling assumptions; to identify authoritative geospatial information that might be used in risk assessments; to review approaches for characterizing sublethal, indirect, and cumulative effects; to assess the scientific information available for estimating effects of mixtures and inert ingredients; and to consider the use of uncertainty factors to account for gaps in data. Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides, which was prepared by the NRC Committee on Ecological Risk Assessment under FIFRA and ESA, is the response to that request.

Book Description
More than 2 billion pounds of pesticides are sold each year in the U.S. for agricultural, commercial, & home uses. The EPA has registered more than 18,000 pesticides, but even these are not always safe. The EPA's regulatory oversight of the pesticide industry is abysmal. When confronted with credible studies on the adverse impacts of pesticides, the EPA has consistently responded by attempting to diminish the findings in any way it can. Chapters: Background on Pesticide Use; Other Wildlife Impacts; Pesticide Use Threatens the Survival of Endangered Species (ES); What Is the EPA Doing to Control the Use of Pesticides?: EPA's Responsibilities Under the ES Act; EPA's So-Called ES Protection ProgramÓ; & EPA & the Courts. Book Description
Although concerns over the ecological impacts of pesticides gave rise to the environmental movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, since that time, pesticide use and its effects have been largely ignored by the law and by legal scholars. This book addresses this omission by providing a unique and serious treatment of the significance of pesticide issues in environmental law and takes an ecological perspective on the legal issues. Dealing with a wide range of questions relating to pests and pesticides, the book focuses primarily on agricultural pesticide use as the largest contaminator in the US. It also examines the legacy of past pesticide use and analyzes how recent developments in ecological science can inform the law and increase our understanding of ecology. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the book will be of interest to academics, lawyers, scientists and environmental and agricultural professionals.

Book Description
The first update to this key reference guide in over 15 years! This revised edition contains a new format making it even easier to study for the DPR exams. In addition to the review questions found at the end of each chapter, this new edition contains knowledge expectations at the beginning of each chapter. These brief statements describe what you are expected to learn after reading that chapter, allowing you to study more effectively for DPR’s pesticide applicator licensing (QAL/QAC) exams. These knowledge expectations are also highlighted in sidebars throughout each chapter, providing a study roadmap so you know which sections of each chapter are most important. Also new: Updated pesticides table to reflect products available in CaliforniaUpdated information on nematodes, vertebrates, and pathogensExpanded information on environmental hazards, expanded information on personal protective equipment including EPA respirator criteriaUp-to-date information on worker protection standardsExpanded information on pesticide resistanceUpdated compliance guidelines for pesticide use reporting as required by California lawA dedicated chapter covering label reading, including an updated label that reflects current regulations The Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides provides detailed information for selecting, using, handling, storing, and disposing of pesticides. It emphasizes worker protection, prevention of groundwater contamination, protection of endangered species and wildlife, and reduction of environmental problems. This is a significant update to the 2nd Edition, so everyone will want to update their reference library with this new edition. The principles described in this volume apply to all areas of pest control, including agricultural, structural, landscape, greenhouse, and public health applications. Volume 1 in the Pesticide Application Compendium. This is recommended study material for all categories of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Qualified Pesticide Applicator License (QAL) and Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) exams.

Book Description
This volume is a comprehensive treatment of how the principles of ecology and conservation biology can be used to maximize biological control. Conservation Biological Control presents various means to modify or manipulate the environment to enhance the activities of natural enemies of pests. It establishes a conceptual link between ecology and the agricultural use of agents for biological control, and discusses both theoretical issues as well as practical management concerns. Certain to be interesting to ecologists and entomologists, this volume will also appeal to scientists, faculty, researchers and students interested in pest management, horticulture, plant sciences, and agriculture. Contains chapters by an international team of leading authorities Establishes a conceptual link between ecology and the agricultural use of agents for biological control Discusses both theoretical issues as well as practical management concerns Provides specific examples of how conservation principles are used to maximize the biological control of pests
