Understanding U.S. Military Conflicts through Primary Sources [4 volumes]
Author: James R. Arnold
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1610699343
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1820
Book Description
An easily accessible resource that showcases the links between using documented primary sources and gaining a more nuanced understanding of military history. Primary source analysis is a valuable tool that teaches students how historians utilize documents and interpret evidence from the past. This four-volume reference traces key decisions in U.S. military history—from the Revolutionary War through the 21st-century conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq—by examining documents relating to military strategy and national policy judgments by U.S. military and political leaders. A comprehensive introductory essay provides readers with the context necessary to understand the relationship between diplomatic documents, military correspondence, and other documentation related to events that shaped warfare, diplomacy, and military strategy. Once the stage is set, the work covers 14 conflicts that are significant to U.S. history. Treatment of each of the conflicts begins with a historical overview followed by a chronology and approximately 30 primary source documents presented in chronological order. Each document is accompanied by a description and annotations and by an analysis that highlights its importance to the event or topic under discussion. Designed for secondary school and college students, the work will be exceptionally valuable to teachers who will appreciate the ready-made lessons that fit directly into core curriculum standards.

Truman and Korea
Author: Paul G. Pierpaoli
Publisher: University of Missouri Press
ISBN: 0826261310
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
"Detailing for the first time the story of America's homefront during the Korean War, Truman and Korea fills an important gap in the historical scholarship of the era. Paul Pierpaoli analyzes the political, economic, social, and international ramifications of America's first war of Soviet containment, never losing sight of the larger context of the Cold War. He focuses on how and why the Truman administration undertook a bloody, inconclusive war on the Korean peninsula while permanently placing the nation on a war footing." "Based upon extensive research in the papers and official presidential files of Harry S. Truman, as well as many manuscript collections and records of wartime and government agencies, Truman and Korea offers a new perspective on the Korean War era and its inextricable ties to broader Cold War decision making."--Jacket.

Emergency Management of the National Economy
Author: Industrial College of the Armed Forces
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781479438860
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 118
Book Description
The Industrial College of the Armed Forces was established to prepare selected officers of the Armed Forces, both Regular and Reserve, and civilian executives for important managerial positions in time of emergency. Instruction is provided in three forms: (1) resident, (2) correspondence, and (3) traveling lecture teams. The base for all three types of instruction is the same. Experience attests to the great value of the correspondence course. The subject matter is presented in small volumes for convenience, each volume representing a major division of the subject. They are reorganized and revised from time to time to bring them up to date and to place emphasis as change may dictate upon those phases of the course deemed most important. Considerable background and illustrative materials are included as a basis for broad and comprehensive education in the field of world resources and their use in support of national objectives. The texts consist of materials written by members of the faculty of the Industrial College, of selected lectures delivered at the College, and of selections from various publications. The texts in use were prepared mainly by the Correspondence Text Committee of the Education Division of the College. Current revisions of these texts are prepared by the Branches of the Education Division and coordinated by the Committee, which consists of Dr. Benjamin H. Williams, Chairman, Dr. Harold J. Clem, Dr. Louis C. Hunter, Dr. Andrew J. Kress, and Dr. Samuel H. McGuire. Suggestions and recommendations are based on the instructional policy of the Correspondence Study Branch as well as on student reactions to text materials. The Industrial College owes a debt of gratitude to a number of lecturers, writers, and publishers who have permitted the use of their materials in this series of texts. Specific acknowledgments are made in each volume for these contributions.
