This book is a study of three iatrosofia (the notebooks of traditional healers) from the Ottoman and modern periods of Greece. The main text is a collection of the medical recipes of the monk Gymnasios Lauriōtis (b. 1858). Gymnasios had a working knowledge of over 2,000 plants and their use in medical treatments. Two earlier iatrosofia are used for parallels for Gymnasios’s recipes. One was written c. 1800 by a practical doctor near Khania, Crete, and illustrated by a second hand. The second iatrosofion dates to the sixteenth century; ascribed to a Meletios, the text survives in the Codex Vindobonensis gr. med. 53. The contents of these and other iatrosofia are predominantly medical, with many of the remedies taken from folk medicine, classical and Hellenistic pharmacological writers, and Galen. The book opens with a biography of the monk Gymnasios and his recipes and then a description of the Cretan and Meletios iatrosofia. The iatrosophia, their role in Greek medical history, and the methods of healing are the subject of chapter 2. The Greek text of Gymnasios’s recipes are accompanied by a facing English translation. A commentary offers for each of Gymnasios’s recipes passages (translated into English) from the two other iatrosophia to serve as parallels, as well as an analysis of the pharmacopoeia in the medical texts. The book concludes with Greek and English indices of the material medica (plants, mineral, and animal substances) and the diseases, and then a general index.

In the last fifteen years, psychologists have rediscovered culture and its influence on emotion, thought, and self. Many researchers have come to the conclusion that the world's cultures can be ranked according to the degree to which they are individualist or collectivist, with Western cultures falling at the individualist end and non-Western cultures at the collectivist end. These scholars argue that while individualist cultures give rise to "independent" selves, leading Westerners to think and act autonomously, collectivist cultures foster "interdependent" selves, leading non-Westerners, embedded in social-relationships, to think and act relationally. Culture and Identity in a Muslim Society presents an alternative to the individualist- collectivist approach to identity. Unlike most psychological and anthropological studies of culture and self, Gary Gregg's work directly investigates individuals, using "study of lives"-style interviews with young adults living in villages and small towns in southern Morocco. Analyzing these young adults' life-narratives, Gregg builds a theory of culture and identity that differs from prevailing psychological and anthropological models in important respects. In contrast to modernist theories of identity as unified, the life-narratives show individuals to articulate a small set of shifting identities. In contrast to post-modern theories that claim people have a kaleidoscopic multiplicity of fluid identities, the narratives show that the identities are integrated by repeated use of culturally-specific self-symbols, metaphors, and story-plots. Most importantly, the life-narratives show these young Moroccans' self-representations to be pervasively shaped by the volatile cultural struggle between Western-style "modernity" and authentic Muslim "tradition." Offering a new approach to the study of identity, the volume will be of interest to cross-cultural psychologists, anthropologists, scholars of Middle-East societies, and researchers specializing in the study of lives.

Different Hidden Values (Goals), Different Cultures One may be tempted to quickly dismiss fanatics or terrorists, yelling and boasting political leaders with the throwaway thought that "those people are insane." But their sanity is not the issue with which we are dealing. Crazy or not, dismissive judgment of those fanatics or terrorists will not lead to an understanding of their basic psychological makeup, whereas this understanding is critical if one may reasonably expect that the fight against terrorism will yield any success. To change things, armed forces --just as terror and spreading hatred-- have very limited effectiveness. The contemporary Muslim world appears to be a depressive society, in conflict with its own feelings of sorrow, mutual distrust, humiliation, impotence and fear, each facet of which leads to intolerance. In essence, cultures differ from one another. The analysis of cultures in terms of the Hidden Values (Goals) can help in understanding those differences. With this understanding we can find out why religious and political conflicts may arise and whether they can be solved. The Hidden Goal of RELIGIOUS ORDER is not as predominant in other cultures as it is in Muslim cultures. However, this does not mean that this Hidden Goal prevails everywhere and always in the Muslim world. Cultural and sub-cultural differences are the outcome of different Hidden Goal combinations. The Hidden Values (Goals) may vary in ranking in every culture. In "drawing-board states" like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, or many other countries in the world, people following strong opposing Hidden Values (Goals) are compelled to live together. We have to accept that these people can never live in peace with one another if their differences are not dealt with. These differences cannot simply be bridged by "democracy." Often only by giving some kind of regional self-governance can avoid (further) conflicts. A golden rule to bear in mind is: the central state concept will only be accepted with hard feelings, if at all, in societies where independence and freedom predominate, and the Hidden Values (Goals) of STABILITY is low in the ranking. Opposing governing concepts make it unlikely that the Western (Jeffersonian) concept of democracy will solve the social-economical problems in many of these regions. Here, alliances and treaties seem the only way to build peaceful communities. Muslims and non-Muslims must engage themselves intensively in promoting constructive information and knowledge. Long-term planning should include the founding of new scientific institutes to educate young Muslims in tolerant Muslim principles. Those institutes have the potential to become great houses of spreading broad and tolerant knowledge, like those institutes in the old days before the Ijtihad (independent thinking) came to an end. This book concludes with recommendations concerning interventions and change, control and administration, and effective communication.

It argues that a crisis of trust currently hampers intercultural relations and obstructs full participation in citizenship and civil society for those who fall prey to the suspicions of the state and their fellow citizens. This crisis of trust presents a challenge to the plurality of modern societies where religious identities have come to demand an equal recognition and political accommodation which is not consistently awarded across Europe, especially in nations which view themselves as secular, or where Islamic culture is seen as alien.
