Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Geodesy The chief reason for making the following pages public is the desire to put into better shape the principles of Geodesy, and have accessible in a single book what heretofore has been scattered through many. The advanced student and practised observer will find nothing new in this work, and may, when accident throws it into their hands, lay it aside with feelings of disappointment. But it is hoped that the beginner will be enabled to get a clear insight into the subject, and feel grateful that the discoveries and writings of many have been so condensed or elaborated as to make the study of Geodesy pleasant. The plan pursued in the discussions that follow is to take up each division in its logical order, develop each formula step by step, and leave the results or conclusion in the shape that the majority of writers have considered the best. In the text only occasional acknowledgments have been inserted, though at the end of each chapter a list of books will be found to which reference has been frequently made. These lists are by no means complete, so far as the literature of the subject is concerned, but contain the titles of those books which were found the most helpful while engaged in self-instruction. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Geodetic Astronomy: For Civil Engineers This book was written for the students in the course in civil engineering at the Ohio State University and to put in permanent form the author's manner of presenting this subject. After an experience of over sixteen years in teaching geodetic astronomy to engineering students, he is firmly convinced of the value of this subject as a training for the young engineer. Practical astronomy gives, as nothing else does, experience in precise meas urement and in handling long and intricate calculations. Book Description
Excerpt from Geodesy The once generally accepted ratio 298 299 of the earth's axes may be said to have disappeared finally on the publication (in 1858) of the investigation of the Figure of the Earth in the Account of the Tri angulation of the British Isles, when it was replaced by 293 294. At the same time that this ratio is, in the present volume, still further altered in the same direction, the formerly received value of the ratio as deduced from pendulum observations is now altered from something like 288 289 up to the same figures as now represent meridian measurements, namely, about 292 293. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Practical Astronomy and Geodesy These Notes form the substance of a course of lectures in Practical Astronomy and Geodesy given to students of the Third Year in Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Applied Science. And Engineering of the University of Toronto. These lectures are only designed to meet the requirements of the engineer or land surveyor in his ordinary practice, or those of the explorer wishing to determine his position in an unsettled country, and therefore barely touch upon the precise methods of the geodetic surveyor. The subjects treated how, ever and the methods of treatment, are fundamental; so that the course serves as a useful introduction for those who desire to extend their studies to the higher parts of the subject.
