El presente texto, en lugar de considerar la obra como un hecho consumado, analiza las etapas de la construcción en forma correlativa uniendo unas con otras hasta llegar a la finalización del edificio. También se han dejado expresamente de lado los elementos del diseño y de cálculo por pertenecer a la etapa anterior a la iniciación de la obra en sí, a no ser de los cálculos elementales necesarios para solucionar problemas puntuales. Nuestra intención, al iniciar los trabajos de este manual, fue la de dotar a los técnicos y constructores, que se supone conocedores de estas especificaciones,de una guía o recordatorio útil que les pueda solucionar los problemas cuando se encuentren con ellos en el transcurso de una obra, y para los estudiantes, la posibilidad de introducirse en la especialidad mediante la correlación de tareas. Se ha puesto especial hincapié en que la solución de esos problemas sea en base a través de la imagen, por lo que se ha dotado a la obra con más de 650 ilustraciones. También se ha tenido especial interés en que la obra pueda ser útil tanto a españoles como hispanoamericanos, tratando de que el lenguaje técnico pueda entenderse en ambos continentes. No obstante, también en estos casos creemos que la interpretación queda solucionada con las imágenes que son un idioma universal.
