A Study of Superconductivity in Leadbismuth Alloys Using Elctron Tunneling Techniques

Book Description
Some of the properties of superconducting leadbismuth alloy films were investigated using electron tunneling techniques. The superconducting energy gaps and transition temperatures as well as the effective tunneling density of electron states near the end point of the phonon spectrum were measured for various compositions of this alloy system. It was found that pure bismuth films as well as bismuth films containing small amounts of lead are not superconducting above 1 K. The results also indicate that for alloys with bismuth concentrations between about 35% and 75%, superconductivity is due partially to a proximity effect. (Author).

Electron Tunneling Into Superconducting Tin Films
Author: Mohamad Abdalla El-Semary

Book Description
The energy gap of Sn-Sn and Sn-Pb tunnel junctions has been measured with accuracy better than one per cent. The values of the energy gaps at 0°K are found to be 2[delta][subscript Sn](0) = 1.22 mv and 2[delta][subscript Pb](0) = 2.6 mv. The ratio 2[delta][subscript Sn](0)/K[subscript B]T[subscript C] = 3.68. It is experimentally confirmed that the variation of [[delta](T)/[delta](0)][superscript 2] is a linear function of t = T/T[subscript C] just below T[subscript C], as indicated by the BCS theory. The transition temperature of Sn films is (3.83 ± 0.01)°K. The relative jump in the specific heat at T[subscript C] is calculated from the I - v traces to be (1.61 ± 0.02). The phonon structure in Sn and Pb has been investigated at 2°K and 4.2°K respectively.
