Book Description
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book Description
Excerpt from Electrical Photometry and Illumination: A Treatise on Light and Its Distribution, Photometric Apparatus, and Illuminating Engineering This book is primarily intended as a text-book for second year engineering students. It contains in an amplified form the lectures delivered by the author during the session 1911. The subject of photometry and illuminating engineering has been somewhat neglected in the past, and whereas one finds scores of books on electrical machinery, there have been very few on photometry and lighting. Yet this subject is as important as, or even more so than, the design of dynamos and motors. It Is useless to raise the efficiency of generators and motors by 1 or 2 per cent. And afterwards to waste the power by improper illuminating engineering. Illuminating engineering is a combined science of physics and physiology. This has been far too little understood in the past, with the result that physiology has hardly been considered. Our knowledge of physiological science is still very meagre. We neither possess any apparatus with which we can measure the physiological quality of an illumination, nor have we been able to remove the difficulties which we encounter when lights of different colours are compared. For a long time - while englneers were busily engaged in perfecting the generating plant and the light-producing devices - the subject of illuminating engineering was left in the background, with the result that one often finds the finest buildings poorly lighted, not so much from the physical, as from the physiological standpoint. Especially, architects are to blame in this direction 3 any illumination is often considered good enough, as will be gathered from the fact that for a. Particular building costing the sum allocated by the architects for the lighting was only 100, in spite of the building being largely wanted for entertainments at night. Although the book is primarily intended for college students, it is hoped that it will be found useful by others interested in illuminating engineering, such as medical men, architects, teachers, and even the general public. The mathematics have been kept as elementary as possible, and persons not acquainted with higher mathematics may skip the deductions of the formulae without detriment.
