Pero es innegable que hace 35.000 años las sociedades cazadoras recolectoras encontraron un medio de expresión cargado de simbolismo y belleza. Y este arte se manifiesta desde sus comienzos en las dos formas que son posibles: el realismo y la abstracción. Este libro pretende acercar al alumno, de una forma clara y actualizada, los principales conceptos del Arte durante la Prehistoria, es decir, durante la inmensa mayoría de la historia de la humanidad. Ese dilatado periodo de tiempo conoció manifestaciones diversas, pero dentro de unos parámetros de cierta homogeneidad para cada una de las grandes divisiones prehistóricas. La estructura del libro intenta facilitar el trabajo personalizado y la autoevaluación en la comprensión de los contenidos, con el objetivo de mostrar las grandes líneas de arte prehistórico en los cinco continentes, aunque tenga un mayor peso el arte europeo y de la península Ibérica.
