This book focuses on essential aspects of the theoretical foundations that support blended learning (BL) as a teaching training modality in tertiary education. Achieving this goal requires the use of participative teaching methods and the development of self-directed learning (SDL) curricula that help the student consolidate the skills that will be useful in his or her professional life. Objectives: to identify the degree of SDL perceived by students and determinate if their perception changed as a function of the teaching methods they experienced as they progressed through their university education. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, involving 1.190 students enrolled in the nursing, physiotherapy, medicine and psychology degree programs at the University of Girona. Our results suggest a need to train both students and teachers in SDL as a teaching-learning methodology and to improve its use in the university setting. Instructors should be offered programs related to teaching methodols to improve their understanding how SDL works and help them identify objectives that would help to promote autonomy and prepare health professionals to be lifelong learners –and thus continuously improve their professional skills.
