Excerpt from Eighth Report to the General Assembly of Rhode Island: Relating to the Registry and Returns of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, in the State, for the Year Ending December 31, 1860 Gentlemen: - In compliance with chapter 76 of the Revised Statutes, the Eighth Annual Report relating to the Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Rhode Island, during the year 1860, is respectfully submitted. A committee of the Rhode Island Medical Society has annually been appointed for the purpose of rendering such assistance as may be necessary in executing the provisions of the law. With the approval of this committee, the returns were placed in the hands of Edward A. Crane, M. D., of Providence, the writer of the last report, who has superintended the work of tabulation and contributed the remarks which follow. Many interesting facts and important principles are presented in connection with the vital movements of our populations, in the present report, while the results of registration arc becoming, from year to year, more valuable, as the field of observation is extended, and the returns increase in accuracy and completeness. Although the returns are made more complete every year, there are, nevertheless, some towns in which there is still room for improvement. The larger cities and towns are, in all their parts, far more complete than those whose population is small, and in which, it is to be supposed, the returns would be more complete. Thus, the cities of Providence and Newport, and the large and populous towns of Smithfield, North Providence, Warwick and Cumberland, exhibit a completeness in their details which might be adduced as examples for some of the smaller towns to follow. The records of marriages are more perfect than the other returns, but not entirely so. These are made by the clergy and by them given to the town clerks. Excerpt from State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations: Twenty-Eighth Annual Report of the Commissioners of Inland Fisheries, Made to the General Assembly, at Its January Session, 1898 Menhaden have been very abundant in sections, and the catch runs higher than for several years. Although I have not the full statistics, I think the catch for the entire coast will exceed fish, or barrels. There was a very large body of fish on the coast from Cape Cod to Eastport, Me.. And large catches were made by those having factories there. A large body of these fish came into our bays in July and remained about forty days. Good catches were made by those running their factories, but most of the Rhode Island boats were in Maine, where the fish were fatter and more valuable. The Connecticut and New York boats had good fishing in Long Island Sound, Gard ner's Bay and along the coast, and made excellent catches. In Delaware Bay, the fishing was as good as could be desired, and large catches were made by all the boats, and the same was true of the Chesapeake Bay and North Carolina coast.
