Spain is facing an increasingly difficult situation in terms of water stress. This is an issue that is due mostly to poor management practices in all sectors. Large amounts of water have been used for agricultural purposes at very low prices for too long; there is an uncontrolled use of most aquifers in rural areas which result from ineffective control by the public administration; per capita consumption continues increasing as well as water used for industrial and energy generation, the construction and tourism sectors and for recreation activities. In fact, they have all exerted additional pressure on available water resources. In order to face the above challenges, water policy has made a gradual shift towards more rational and sustainable management of water resources. This has also been influenced by the European Water Framework Directive about which, as the book discusses, there are both myths and misunderstandings. This book analyses the very complex position of all sectors in the country, the alternatives available and the challenges ahead. In so doing, it makes an important contribution to the literature on water resources management. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Por muchos años, un número limitado de métricas económicas se han utilizado para evaluar el desempeño organizacional. Actualmente, este enfoque ha evolucionado y cada vez más se incluyen métricas de sostenibilidad para evaluar el desempeño de cualquier organización. Aún con la inclusión de métricas sociales y ecológicas, la sostenibilidad sigue representado un paradigma de creación de oportunidades para las empresas, y las iniciativas existentes en este rubro son limitadas y muy generales. Es por esto que herramientas que midan y proyecten métricas de sostenibilidad se vuelven necesarias en un ambiente tan competitivo, sobretodo para las pequeñas y medianas empresas que representan un rol estratégico en las economías mundiales. El objetivo principal de este estudio es el de desarrollar un sistema de información que sirva como herramienta para la autoevaluación en materia de eficiencia energética para PyMES en la industria metalmecánica. La garantía de un desarrollo sostenible supone no sólo una lucha contra el calentamiento global sino un esfuerzo para erradicar la pobreza energética y la seguridad del abastecimiento de la demanda de energía mundial. A través de una revisión literaria de trabajos previamente publicados en materia de eficiencia energética, se identificaron factores clave que permitieron desarrollar las bases para la creación de un modelo particular que permita arrojar un diagnóstico en eficiencia energética. A partir de este modelo se desarrolló una herramienta que permitiera la autoevaluación en materia energética. Dicha herramienta fue validada por medio de dos pruebas, una con un experto en la industria, y la otra con una empresa local. La herramienta creada sirve como un vehículo para detectar áreas de oportunidad en desarrollo sostenible específicamente en materia energética, y puede ser trasladada a otras industrias haciendo cambios en uno de sus módulos.

Hoy en dia existen varias tecnicas para disminuir el consumo energetico y se han instrumentado las instancias gubernamentales necesarias para poder asesorar a la pequeña, mediana y gran industria en esta area. De acuerdo con las estadisticas energeticas, son justamente la pequeña y mediana industria las que deben hacer un esfuerzo mayor por prepararse y forma una conciencia de ahorro energetico a todos los niveles, no solo por el impacto monetario, sino tambien por el impacto a nuestro medio ambiente.
