This study investigated the learning environment among elementary school science students. In particular, it investigated the effects of using a teacher-made graphic organizer on the learning environment and attitudes to science among fourth grade students. I designed the graphic organizer PRIDE, whose design was based on the principles of CRISS (Santa, Havens, & Maycumber, 1996), a research-based reading program created to enhance reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, associations between student outcomes (attitudes toward science) and the nature of the classroom leaning environment were explored. A historical look at the field of learning environments over the past few decades shows that a striking feature is the availability of a variety of economical, valid and widely-applicable questionnaires for assessing students' perceptions of the classroom environments (Fraser, 1998b). My study involved modification of a classroom environment questionnaire, WIHIC (What Is Happening In this Class'?), and an attitudinal survey. TOSRA (Test of Science Related Attitudes). The modified instruments were field tested among 860 students in Grades 4-6 in order to determine their validity and reliability. Qualitative methods involving student interviews were used in modifying the instruments prior to field testing. The significance of this study is that it adds to existing knowledge in the field of learning environments and encourages further research in this field in early childhood settings. The research also adds to the existing research conducted using graphic organizers. In addition, the design of an original graphic organizer makes available to practitioners an innovative tool to assist students to improve their science learning. The study also promotes action research and professional development among educators within their classroom setting in an attempt to improve their classroom learning environment.

Research question: In what ways do graphic organizers along with teacher guided questions affect third grade English Language Learner's performance on Narrative Writing prompts? Subquestions: How will this improve ELL's organization and focus on narrative prompts? How will this affect student's use of sensory details? How will this affect student's confidence about themselves as writers? How will this affect student's attitudes toward writing? Research Activities: Context: This inquiry took place in a third grade classroom at Lincoln Elementary School. The school implemented Response to Intervention (RTI) which required students to be grouped based on their reading abilities and sent to their leveled classroom to be taught reading and language arts. Three out of the four target students were English Language Learner's (ELL's) as indicated on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). The remaining student was classified as Initial Fluent English Proficient (IFEP). The target students were chosen based on their low performance on a district mandated narrative writing assessment. Methods and data: The Narrative writing intervention occurred over a period of eight weeks including a two week winter break. The main goals were to increase student's organization, use of adjectives, and use of story connectors. Other components studied included effects on confidence and interest in writing. Students practiced using the Quick Sketch graphic organizer as a pre-writing tool to organize their narrative writing with a beginning, middle, and end. They also practiced using the Adjective Organizer as a revising tool to include more adjectives in their writing. Students used the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) for each writing task. Data sets include six narrative writing pieces, including a pre-assessment and two post assessments. Results: Comparisons of baseline and outcome data indicate one student made significant gains in both her organization and use of adjectives, one student made moderate gains, and two students showed slight improvements throughout the intervention, but did not show improvement on their post assessments. Conclusions: Comparisons of baseline and outcome data indicate using graphic organizers that included guided questions along with illustrations helped students to organize their ideas and write a more organized paper. It also helped improve the use of story connectors and adjectives. Generally, students' interest in writing went down slightly, but they showed increased confidence in their writing ability. Educators who feel they do not have the sufficient background knowledge and confidence to teach science to students need a method that gives them the means to promote meaningful learning in the science content area. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness from the perspective of middle school teachers on the use of graphic organizers; and to present their insights on the effects of teacher confidence in practicing science education. The results indicated that for some educators who had an engaging teaching philosophy and effective classroom managmenet techniques used the graphic organizers as teaching tools that positively effected their ability and confidence to teach science. These techers used the process driven organizer to direct the flow of information and focus learning activities on the students. While other educators were too dependent on having the background content knowledge to use the graphic organizers to teach science. This paper examines the theory of how information is processed and applies it to the use of graphic organizers by teachers to engage in their own learning while teaching. This study also focuses on a new direction in graphic organizer research in an effort to provide a base for future investigations from the teacher's perspective.
