Book Description
This book is designed as a textbook for a one-semester course in combustion and emissions in IC engines (reciprocating engines) at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently, I am teaching this course at Lakehead University, which I developed from my area of research-expertise. I planned the textbook in such a way that all necessary material required by those taking a course on combustion and emissions in IC engines are found within. The book's twelve chapters are designed in such a way that the instructor could complete it within a 12 to 13-week semester. The chapters are arranged from basic properties of ideal gases, IC engine cycles, fuels and combustion of fuels, combustion in SI, CI and dual-fuel engines, testing of IC engines, hydrogen use in IC engines, and finally emissions from IC engines and air pollution. My three decades of university teaching experience are used to write this book as simple as possible for all students. Too many exercise problems are avoided, and an appropriate number of problem-solving exercises from different topics are included. Whenever possible, my own, along with other relevant research works are presented in a consistent way relevant to the topic. The flow of the topics in different chapters appears in logical order, and the explanation of terminology is made simple. Systems of units and unit conversion are written exclusively for mechanical engineering students in a better, more rational and more useful fashion than any other book in academia.I enjoyed writing this book. If the students for whom it is primarily written find it useful, my efforts will be rewarded. Year after year, I heard frustration from my students about the lack of a suitable textbook. Through my work, I hope to have provided a solution to their frustration. Any suggestions for the improvement of this work will be gratefully welcomed.

Book Description
Advances in Oxygenated Fuels for Sustainable Development: Feedstocks and Precursors for Catalysts Synthesis provides a roadmap to the sustainable implementation of oxygenated fuels in internal combustion engines through sustainable production, smart distribution and effective utilization. Focusing on the sustainability of feedstocks, the book assesses availability, emissions impact and reduction potential, and biodiversity and land utilization impact. Existing technologies and supply chains are reviewed, and recommendations are provided on how to sustainably implement or update these technologies, including for rural communities. Furthermore, effective supply and distribution network designs are provided alongside methods for monitoring and assessing their sustainability, accounting for social, economic, environmental and ecological factors. This book guides readers through every aspect of the production and commercialization of sustainable oxygenated fuels for internal combustion engines and their implementation across the global transport industry. - Provides multilevel perspectives on how to facilitate the sustainable production of oxygenated fuel and develop new indices for measuring the effectiveness and sustainability of implementation - Recommends a framework and criteria for assessing the suitability, sustainability, and environmental benefits of oxygenated biofuels - Describes the fuel properties of all oxygenated fuels and their performance in unmodified and enhanced CI and SI engines

Book Description
In today’s global context, there has been extensive research conducted in reducing harmful emissions to conserve and protect our environment. In the automobile and power generation industries, diesel engines are being utilized due to their high level of performance and fuel economy. However, these engines are producing harmful pollutants that contribute to several global threats including greenhouse gases and ozone layer depletion. Professionals have begun developing techniques to improve the performance and reduce emissions of diesel engines, but significant research is lacking in this area. Recent Technologies for Enhancing Performance and Reducing Emissions in Diesel Engines is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on technical and environmental enhancements to the emission and combustion characteristics of diesel engines. While highlighting topics such as biodiesel emulsions, nanoparticle additives, and mathematical modeling, this publication explores the potential additives that have been incorporated into the performance of diesel engines in order to positively affect the environment. This book is ideally designed for chemical and electrical engineers, developers, researchers, power generation professionals, mechanical practitioners, scholars, ecologists, scientists, graduate students, and academicians seeking current research on modern innovations in fuel processing and environmental pollution control.

Book Description
Combustion technology has traditionally been dominated by air/fuel combustion. However, two developments have increased the significance of oxygen-enhanced combustion - new technology producing oxygen less expensively and the increased importance of environmental regulations. Advantages of oxygen-enhanced combustion include numerous environmental benefits as well as increased energy efficiency and productivity. The text compiles information about using oxygen to enhance high temperature industrial heating and melting processes - serving as a unique resource for specialists implementing the use of oxygen in combustion systems; combustion equipment and industrial gas suppliers; researchers; funding agencies for advanced combustion technologies; and agencies developing regulations for safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly combustion systems. Oxygen-Enhanced Combustion: Examines the fundamentals of using oxygen in combustion, pollutant emissions, oxygen production, and heat transfer Describes ferrous and nonferrous metals, glass, and incineration Discusses equipment, safety, design, and fuels Assesses recent trends including stricter environmental regulations, lower-cost methods of producing oxygen, improved burner designs, and increasing fuel costs Emphasizing applications and basic principles, this book will act as the primary resource for mechanical, chemical, aerospace, and environmental engineers and scientists; physical chemists; fuel technologists; fluid dynamists; and combustion design engineers. Topics include: General benefits Economics Potential problems Pollutant emissions Oxygen production Adsorption Air separation Heat transfer Ferrous metals Melting and refining processes Nonferrous metals Minerals Glass furnaces Incineration Safety Handling and storage Equipment design Flow controls Fuels

Book Description
Diesel engines, also known as CI engines, possess a wide field of applications as energy converters because of their higher efficiency. However, diesel engines are a major source of NOX and particulate matter (PM) emissions. Because of its importance, five chapters in this book have been devoted to the formulation and control of these pollutants. The world is currently experiencing an oil crisis. Gaseous fuels like natural gas, pure hydrogen gas, biomass-based and coke-based syngas can be considered as alternative fuels for diesel engines. Their combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics are described in this book. Reliable early detection of malfunction and failure of any parts in diesel engines can save the engine from failing completely and save high repair cost. Tools are discussed in this book to detect common failure modes of diesel engine that can detect early signs of failure.

Book Description
The topics most critical to exhaust gas aftertreatment are described in depth: the problems which need to be overcome, and the possible solutions currently under investigation. After treatment is covered as an emissions subject in its own right; and all components of the entire system are included, not just catalysts. Highly technical issues are presented in a way that makes them readily accessible to the non-specialist. It Includes 700 references.
