Book Description
"A series of tests on a model of the ice class fixed pitch propeller of the Canadian Coast Guard's R-Class icebreakers were conducted in the towing tank at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Performance of the propeller was assessed in both uniform flow and in blocked flow behind a nearby simulated ice piece for two blockage configurations and a range of clearances between the block and the propeller blades. Measurements of thrust and torque were made over a range of speeds. The results help to isolate the separate effects of the extreme wake within which the propeller operates, and of proximity of the ice piece. The work forms part of a broader research effort examining the performance of propellers when blocked with ice"--Leaf [1].

Book Description
Ice loading on open vs. ducted propellers has been discussed for several years, although there is a lack of facts to support a clear comparison of the systems. This report systematically evaluated the influence of ice thickness, ice strength, ice block size, amount of ice fed to the propeller, propeller revolutions, propeller pitch and vessel speed on the ice loading of propulsion systems by the use of model test series in an ice model basin. Influences were established for basic hydrodynamic load with no ice, ice-induced hydrodynamic load and direct ice contact load. Model test results were correlated with full-scale data. Ice load formulas are given for a range of propeller ice condition combinations.

The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance
Author: Blake W. Corson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 42
Book Description
Tests of a 10-foot-diameter three-blade Curtiss 89301-15 propeller with Clark Y blade sections have been conducted in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel in order to determine the effect of simulated iceon the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller. The irregular coat of cement and fabric was used on the blades to simulate in outline and thickness a formation of glaze ice that might be formed in flight. The propellers were tested on a new 2000-horsepower dynamometer, a brief description of which is included. All tests were made at a rotational speed of 1800 rpm for blade angles of 20, 25, 35, and 40 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 120 to 420 miles per hour. The results are representative of full-scale constant-speed propeller operation.
