Book Description
The main objective of this study was to examine the possibility of improving the fracture toughness of metal matrix composites via alteration/improvement of the ductility of the matrix through heat treatment. Tensile and fracture toughness testing, based on relevant ASTM standards, have been performed on specimens with different heat treatment conditions. Two solution treatment temperatures of 560 and 530°C were used during the heat treatment. Artificial aging of the specimens was carried out at two temperatures of 150 and 200°C as a function of time over the range of 15 minutes to 450 hours. Both conventional and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM and FE-SEM) as well as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have been used to study and correlate fracture mechanism(s) and microstructural aspects. Based on the results from the present project, the effect of heat treatment on fracture toughness values was found similar to that observed in the monolithic alloy. However, the rate of recovery in fracture-related properties of MMCs is lower (or in some cases zero) in the over-aged condition. This "low or no" recovery behaviour for over-aged MMCs can be explained by: (i) clear increase in the size of shear lips with increasing aging time, and (ii) a shift from particle fracture (in under-aged regime) to interface (or near interface) debonding in over-aged regime. The formation/presence of a spinel phase at the interface is recognized as the main cause of this behavior. Although, spinel products mainly form during material processing, their formation is found to continue during the solid state thermal heat treatment as well. Alternatively, the spinel/matrix bonding may go through a drastic change in the long aging process, hence affecting the fracture behaviour.

Book Description
The influence of reinforcement size, volume fraction, and matrix deformation behavior on room and elevated temperature strength; the fracture toughness; and the fatigue crack growth rate of metal matrix composites of Al-4(pct)Cu-1.5(pct)Mg with TiB2 were examined. The influence of reinforcement volume fraction was also examined for pure aluminum with TiB2. Higher TiB2 volume fractions increased the tensile yield strength at both room and elevated temperatures, and reduced the elongation to fracture. Tensile tests also indicate that small particles provided a greater increase in strength for a given volume fraction than larger particles, whereas elongation to fracture appeared to be insensitive to reinforcement size. Interparticle spacing appears to be the factor that controls the strength of these alloys, with the exact nature of the dependence relying on the nature of dislocation slip in the matrix (planar vs. diffuse). The isothermal aging response of the precipitation strengthened Al-4(pct)Cu-1.5(pct)Mg alloys was not accelerated by the presence of TiB2. Cold work prior to artificial aging created additional geometrically necessary dislocations which serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites leading to accelerated aging, a finer precipitate size, and an increase in the strength of the alloy. Book Description
Ageing of composites is a highly topical subject given the increasing use of composites in structural applications in many industries. Ageing of composites addresses many of the uncertainties about the long-term performance of composites and how they age under conditions encountered in service. The first part of the book reviews processes and modelling of composite ageing including physical and chemical ageing of polymeric composites, ageing of glass-ceramic matrix composites, chemical ageing mechanisms, stress corrosion cracking, thermo-oxidative ageing, spectroscopy of ageing composites, modelling physical and accelerated ageing and ageing of silicon carbide composites. Part two examines ageing of composites in transport applications including aircraft, vehicles and ships. Part three reviews ageing of composites in non-transport applications such as implants in medical devices, oil and gas refining, construction, chemical processing and underwater applications. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Ageing of composites is a valuable reference guide for composite manufacturers and developers. It also serves as a source of information for material scientists, designers and engineers in industries that use composites, including transport, chemical processing and medical engineering. - Addresses many of the uncertainties about the long-term performance of composites and how they age under conditions encountered in service - Reviews processes and modelling of composite ageing including chemical ageing mechanisms and stress corrosion cracking - Discusses ageing of composites in both transport and non-transport applications ranging from aircraft to implants in medical devices
