The purpose of this mixed-methodology study was to explore Lifespan Integration as a treatment modality for homeless women at a rehabilitation shelter. The women had histories of trauma, intimate partner violence, addiction, mental illness, and psychosocial issues. This research utilized Lifespan Integration with this population in order to improve anxiety-related symptoms and increase coping skills. The researcher recruited 23 women from a local Seattle area women’s shelter. Each participant was randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. All participants completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Ways of Coping Questionnaire, and a demographic questionnaire before treatment. The women attended one-hour therapy sessions for six weeks. Those in the treatment group received four weeks of Lifespan Integration treatment as a therapeutic intervention, while the control group did not receive Lifespan Integration interventions. At the end of treatment, participants in the treatment group responded to open-ended questions in semi-structured qualitative interviews investigating their experience with this treatment modality. All participants completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory and Ways of Coping Questionnaire post-treatment. Those who did and did not receive Lifespan Integration were compared on anxiety and coping strategies before and after treatment. To assess the relationship between BAI and WCQ scores, a correlational analysis was conducted. The researcher analyzed qualitative interview data to investigate participants’ experiences and perceptions of Lifespan Integration treatment. The quantitative results indicated no statistical evidence of changes in anxiety and coping skills. However, the qualitative results supported the efficacy of Lifespan Integration treatment on anxiety and coping. The quantitative research findings suggested that according to the BAI results and WCQ results, the women in the treatment group did not experience a reduction in their symptoms of anxiety or an improvement in their coping skills as compared to those women in the control group. However, after thematic analysis of the qualitative interviews, there were suggestions of improvements in those areas, specifically with the use of Lifespan Integration intervention as a treatment strategy.

In the research study, Lifespan Integration (LI) is studied in order to determine its effectiveness in treating women who have trauma related symptoms. The participants were gathered at a shelter in Seattle that specializes in chemical dependency treatment and domestic violence prevention. The Impact of Events Scale (IES) was used to measure the symptoms after two LI sessions. Trauma related symptoms can have lasting negative physical and mental health symptoms and can overall decrease the quality of an individual's life if it is not treated effectively. The results suggest that the LI interventions provided relief to trauma related symptoms. However, more research is needed in order to confirm whether LI is truly effective in treating trauma related symptoms or not.

Every day, about 1,600 people are released from prisons in the United States. Of these 600,000 new releasees every year, about 480,000 are subject to parole or some other kind of postrelease supervision. Prison releasees represent a challenge, both to themselves and to the communities to which they return. Will the releasees see parole as an opportunity to be reintegrated into society, with jobs and homes and supportive families and friends? Or will they commit new crimes or violate the terms of their parole contracts? If so, will they be returned to prison or placed under more stringent community supervision? Will the communities to which they return see them as people to be reintegrated or people to be avoided? And, the institution of parole itself is challenged with three different functions: to facilitate reintegration for parolees who are ready for rehabilitation; to deter crime; and to apprehend those parolees who commit new crimes and return them to prison. In recent decades, policy makers, researchers, and program administrators have focused almost exclusively on "recidivism," which is essentially the failure of releasees to refrain from crime or stay out of prison. In contrast, for this study the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the U.S. Department of Justice asked the National Research Council to focus on "desistance," which broadly covers continued absence of criminal activity and requires reintegration into society. Specifically, the committee was asked (1) to consider the current state of parole practices, new and emerging models of community supervision, and what is necessary for successful reentry and (2) to provide a research agenda on the effects of community supervision on desistance from criminal activity, adherence to conditions of parole, and successful reentry into the community. To carry out its charge, the committee organized and held a workshop focused on traditional and new models of community supervision, the empirical underpinnings of such models, and the infrastructure necessary to support successful reentry.
