Book Description
This book presents a theoretical treatment, as well as a summary of practical methods of computation, of the forces and moments that act on marine craft. Its aim is to provide the tools necessary for the prediction or simulation of craft motions in calm water and in waves. In addition to developing the required equations, the author gives relations that permit at least approximate evaluation of the coefficients so that useful results can be obtained. The approach begins with the equations of motion for rigid bodies, relative to fixed- and moving-coordinate systems; then, the hydrodynamic forces are examined, starting with hydrostatics and progressing to the forces on a moving vehicle in calm water and (after a review of water-wave theory) in waves. Several detailed examples are presented, including calculations of hydrostatics, horizontal- and vertical-plane directional stability, and wave-induced motions. Also included are unique discussions on various effects, such as fin-hull interactions, numerical stability of integrators, heavy torpedoes, and the dynamics of high-speed craft. The book is intended to be an introductory-level graduate text and a reference for the practicing professional.

Book Description
The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Free-surface Effects in Hull Propeller Interaction

Book Description
The quantitative role of wavemaking at the free surface in the phenomenon of hull propeller interaction is investigated by means of a general scheme devised to determine the potential, viscous and wave components of wake and thrust deduction. It requires the concerted application of various analytical tools such as the lifting line theory of propellers, the method of singularities for representing the hull and propeller by source distributions and the linearized free-surface theory of wavemaking, as well as model experiment techniques such as the conventional Froude analysis of propulsion factors, nominal wake measurements and wave profile measurements. The procedure is applied to the specific case of a thin mathematical hull form driven by a four-bladed propeller of simple geometry.

Book Description
A method is developed for predicting propeller-generated hull surface forces which cause a ship to vibrate. The method applies specifically for vertical, athwartship, axial, or torsional steady-state vibration of the hull girder. The exciting forces are made available as generalized forces effective in exciting the normal modes of the hull free vibration. The free vibration characteristics are assumed to be known in advance. The formula by which the generalized forces can be calculated is derived using potential flow theory. The basic ingredient in the derivation is a theorem which permits the problem to be solved without need for the solution of a hull-propeller interaction boundary value problem. To use the method one must have available: data pertaining to the hull and propeller design, the hull normal mode shapes, an estimate of the propeller blade loading distribution, and the fluid velocity-potential function corresponding to free vibration of the bare hull in each normal mode. Very simple, yet accurate, strip formulas for estimating fluid velocity-potential function, the bare hull velocity potential, and associated velocity components, are derived for the case of hull vertical vibration.
