We found that as a people we knew far too little about the production of food and about the selec tion and preparation of foods. Book Description
Excerpt from The Influence of Reconstruction, on Education in the South The period of the Presidential Plan of Reconstruction, from 1865 to 1867, marks an attempt to enlist the cooperation of the native white citizens in restorin civil order in the South. Under the Congressional Plan, howm7 6, three classes instead of one, as in the Presidential Plan, participated in political affairs: the native whites, the negro freedmen, and men from the North. The native whites were sharply divided into conservatives and radicals or scalawags; the negroes were the most homogeneous, usually of the same mind and easily influenced; while the men from the North, commonly known as carpetbaggers, were, from the standpoint of the South, pre dominantly radical. The Reconstruction conventions and the legislative bodies from 1868 to 1876 were composed largely of negroes, carpetbaggers and scalawags, and the conservatives were in most cases in the minority. Book Description
Excerpt from The Reconstructed School In our school processes there are many constants which have general recognition as such by thoughtful people. On the other hand, there are many variables which should be subjected to close scrutiny to the end that they may be made to yield forth the largest possible returns upon the investment of time and effort. These phases of school procedure constitute the real problem in the work of reconstruction, and the following pages represent an effort to point the way toward larger and better results in the realm of these variables. In general, the aims and purposes of the worker determine the quality of the work done. If, therefore, this volume succeeds in stimulating teachers to elevate the goals of their endeavors, it will have accomplished its purpose. Book Description
Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world con ict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written whentthe great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country, how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Education and the Army: An Essay in Reconstruction It is with considerable diffidence that I set myself to try and give some account of the origins, development, and purpose of the great adult education movement in the Army which it fell to my lot to organize and direct. Such account must of necessity be rather of a personal character, and it seemed better, therefore, if it was thought to be necessary at all, that it should be written by an observer rather than by a participator. But it has been very strongly represented to me by men of much distinction, and acquainted both with what was attempted and with what was achieved, that there is no one else whose experience was sufficiently comprehensive to enable him to undertake the task, and that it is a task which definitely ought to be undertaken.
