This book is a compilation of peer reviewed chapters which address the dynamics of biodiversity and ecosystem services (ESSs) used at Lake Ngami in Northern Botswana. This book focuses on the implications of the ESSs used in terms of human well-being and sustainability, with Lake Ngami as a case study. Three broad cross-cutting themes are addressed: 1) The interaction between ESSs and direct drivers of ecosystem change such as flooding, climate change and variability; 2) the relationship between ESSs and institutions (rules, beliefs, norms, markets and property rights); and 3) the relationship between changes in ESSs and human well-being. In order to address these themes, the authors have divided the book into five parts: 1) Introduction and Background, 2) Supporting and Regulating ESSs, 3) Provisioning ESSs, 4) Cultural ESSs, and 5) Strategy for ESSs' Governance and Policy Implications. The book demonstrates how the ESSs of Lake Ngami have the potential to make a substantial contribution to human-well-being. However, due to the variability in the flooding of the Okavango River, which results in decadal and longer dry periods in the lake, the benefits derived from ESSs by the local population cannot be guaranteed for the future. The contributors to this book are researchers with a plurality of backgrounds in natural and social sciences with diverse views. The policy recommendations suggested by some of the authors could contribute to the sustainable use and management of ESSs of wetlands in semi-arid environments.

Botswana, a thinly populated nation, the size of France, is a Southern African keystone country at the heart of the Kalahari, sharing some of the major sub-continental drainage basins such as the Limpopo, Zambezi, Orange, and Okavango with its neighbouring countries. The extensive Kalahari Sand surface has been sculptured by numerous past processes which have produced subtle but regional landforms consisting of extensive dunes and shorelines. Geological outcrops in particular to the east expose highly denuded basement lithologies which produces numerous inselbergs that are home to a rich archaeological heritage. The book also examines the geomorphology of mineral and water resources which sustain the economy and population and also features dedicated chapters that cover diamondiferous kimberlites, caves, pans, dams, duricrusts and wildlife. Although most antelope species still exist in large numbers in sub-Saharan Africa (some in hundreds of thousands), up to three-quarters of the species are in decline. Threats to their survival arise from the rapid growth of human and livestock populations, with consequent degradation and destruction of natural habitats, and excessive offtake by meat hunters. In addition, some parts of Africa are mow almost completely devoid of large wild animals because of uncontrolled slaughter during recent civil wars. This report presents the information currently held by the IUCN/SSC Antelope Specialist Group on the conservation status of each antelope species (and selected subspecies) in sub-Saharan Africa. Key areas have been identified for the conservation of representative antelope communities. While external donors make the greatest contributions to the conservation of antelopes, greater recognition of wildlife conservation in national and regional development plans is often a critically important requirement.
