Book Description
Oral histories of formerly enlaved people and their families along the South Carolina coast Coming Through marks the first complete publication of these interviews with former slaves and their descendants living in the Waccamaw Neck region of South Carolina as collected by Genevieve W. Chandler as part of the WPA Federal Writers Project. Between 1936 and 1938 Chandler interviewed more than one hundred individuals in and around All Saints Parish, a portion of Horry and Georgetown counties located between the Waccamaw River and the Atlantic Ocean. Her subjects spoke freely with her on topics ranging from slave punishment to folk medicine, from conditions in the Jim Crow South to the exploits of Brer Rabbit. A teacher, artist, writer, and later museum curator, Chandler had no formal training as an oral historian or folklorist, yet the sophistication of her work as documented here anticipates developments in these fields of study a generation later. Her detailed descriptions add social context to folktales, and her careful and systematic renderings of the Gullah language have since been praised as foundational work by Creole linguists. Chandler's Gullah-speaking African American informants range in age from the 9-year-old George Kato Singleton to 104-year-old Welcome Bees. A biography of each subject accompanies the interviews. Collectively these interviews form an intimate portrait of a fascinating subculture of the Carolina coast and the Sea Islands as shared with a remarkable woman who has special access to converse with the people of this traditionally insular world. Moreover they provide an unparalleled firsthand account of the African American experience in South Carolina in the words of those who lived it. The volume is edited by Chandler's daughter, Genevieve C. Peterkin, and two scholars, Kincaid Mills and Aaron McCollough. The three have carefully established the texts of the interviews in a manner that highlights Chandler's skills as a field linguist and have supplemented the texts with revealing documentation. The collection is enhanced with a foreword by Charles W. Joyner, Burroughs Distinguished Professor of History at Coastal Carolina University; appendixes respecting the WPA project and the nuances of Gullah language and culture; and photographs of the subjects taken by renowned photographer Bayard Wootten—many published here for the first time.

Book Description
Once a sleepy city of taverns and coffeehouses, Charleston's reputation as a culinary powerhouse is rooted in its rich history. The origins of she-crab soup trace back through Everett's Restaurant. The fine dining of Henry's evolved from a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Desserts were flamb ed from the pulpit of a deconsecrated church at Chapel Market Place, and Robert's hosted Charleston's famous singing chef. Diners became regulars at Kitty's Fine Foods or Brooks Restaurant on their first visit, while the rise of French cuisine from the Wine Cellar, Marianne and Philippe Million helped elevate the dining scene. From blind tigers to James Beard Awards, author and local tour guide Jessica Surface explores the stories and history of Charleston's love of food.

Whether you’re just starting your career at twenty-two or quickly approaching retirement at sixty-two, Who’s Eating Your Pie? will give you the tools you need to grow a bigger, sweeter financial pie than you ever thought possible—and keep everyone else’s fingers out of it! “H-h-h-h-h-hello. M-m-my n-name is E-e-e-e-e-rik W-w-w-weir. H-how-how c-c-can I e-earn y-y-y-your b-b-business?” Believe it or not, that’s the opening line that drove a young investment broker with a near-debilitating, lifelong stutter into a $1-million-per-year income by age thirty. And that incredible level of success was just the beginning! In his debut book Who’s Eating Your Pie? leader and speaker Erik Weir opens the playbook that’s led him to unbelievable success as an entrepreneur, investor, film producer, and real estate developer. He tackles the tough questions today’s young professionals are asking, such as: Can anyone build wealth, no matter where they’re starting from? Is it moral for me to want to build wealth? What does it mean to be “rich”? How can I build real wealth as a salaried employee? How can I build wealth for myself and others as an entrepreneur? What steps should I take each day to ensure I’m moving forward toward my wealth-building goals? What is the stock market and how does it work? Can I get rich with just a 401(k)? How does real estate investing work? Where does philanthropic giving fit into my wealth-building plan? Erik Weir has helped some of the wealthiest people in the country answer these questions, from multi-Grammy-winning musical artists to CEOs of some of America’s biggest companies to world-renowned professional athletes. Now, he wants to do the same for you, offering you the same advice and guidance he’s given to millionaires and billionaires for the past three decades.
