Johannes "Hans" Grumbacher arrived at Philadelphia, Pa. from Europe in 1733 and bought land in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. in 1734. He died in 1744. He had two wives and seven children. Some children stayed in Coventry Twp., others moved in the 1760's to the Pipe Creek area of Frederick (now Carroll) Co., Md. His widow, Elizabeth, married 1752 Casper Engel (d. 1760). Catherine Grumbacher, the only child of Peter Grumbacher and Catharina Pfautz, inherited the Grumbacher farm in 1778 after her father's death. In 1781 she married John Frick. It is from this Frick family and their descendants that the canal locks and the village, that grew up around the locks in the middle 1800's, derived their surname.
