Book Description
Chartered in 1856, the East Broad Top Railroad began operating in 1873 through scenic Huntingdon County in south-central Pennsylvania. This well-managed narrow-gauge railroad connected the isolated Broad Top Mountain coal field with the Pennsylvania Railroad at Mount Union. With a decline in the hauling of coal, service ended in 1956. Nick Kovalchick, president of the Kovalchick Salvage Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania, purchased the railroad and reopened a portion of it as a tourist line in 1960. Through vintage photographs, East Broad Top Railroad showcases the steam locomotives, rolling stock, and railroad yard at Rockhill Furnace, which is the most historic railroad yard in North America.

This new, limited second edition features 425 color and black and white photographs and covers Bob’s favorite locomotives; his travels in the Northeastern and New England states, Canada, Texas and Oklahoma, Old Border states and the Midwest, Southern states, Mexico and Central America, Persian Gulf countries, Colorado and New Mexico; the vanishing interurban; the San Juan; railroading in the snow; the Poncha, Cumbres and Marshall passes; the Gunnison area; Ouray; the Black Canyon; Durango; Silverton; Cerro Summit; Crested Butte; the Baldwin Branch; the San Luis Valley Line; the Colorado & Southern, Rio Grande Southern and much more. Possessing a fascination with trains and railroading as far back as 1931, Bob’s interest quickly developed into a lifelong career of chasing, riding and photographing trains. His train riding has led to many adventures few railfans have experienced. Bob, with his journalistic penchant, tells a great story, weaving together facts and figures of how it used to be on the railroads. He became editor of the Linn’s Weekly Stamp News, was an advertising coordinator, served in the U.S. Army, owned the famous Narrow Gauge Motel in Alamosa and began publishing the Narrow Gauge News.

East Broad Top Railroad
Author: John Van Horn

Book Description
The East Broad Top Railroad, a narrow gauge railway, is a unique piece of Americana and railroading. Located in south central Pennsylvania, it is a time capsule of structures and machinery from a past era. My good college friend and fellow photographer W. Craig Angle introduced me to the railroad in 1970. This study deals only with the two largest facilities on the EBT. The Mount Union yard was where coal was unloaded from the railroad, processed and reloaded onto standard gauge railroad cars. Rockhill Furnace, also often referred to as Orbisonia (the neighboring town), with its rail yard, railroad shops and roundhouse is considered an exceptionally well preserved early twentieth century industrial complex. This photographic study is just that -- a study, not a historical document, or a then and now essay, but what caught my eye, as a photographer, and as a railfan, what I found most visually interesting.
