Book Description
The topic of this book deals with a highly relevant empirical issue: East asian security and the dynamics of the respective governance structure or architecture are not only of regional but of global concern. Since the pivot of the American pivot to East Asia and other external actor ́s responses to it the security architecture has changed in form, size and function. In order to analyze and explain these changes, hypotheses derived from IR middle range theories (i.e. soft and hard balancing) will be applied to cases of bilateral and multilateral security governance in East Asia.

Book Description
"Updated papers and discussion summary of a RAND conference held in January 1979 to assess the major political, economic, and military trends likely to shape Asian regional security in the 1980s. Twelve chapters explore the impact of the Sino-Soviet rivalry on the region and the implication of indigenous developments associated with the dramatic economic growth and social transformation of East Asia. Specific issues include extension of the Sino-Soviet conflict to Indo-China; the Soviet military buildup in Asia; America's military presence and role in maintaining a force balance; Japan's new defense mood and future policy directions; the coming "crossover" in power relationships between North and South Korea; continuing rapid economic growth and its political consequences; the regional impact of China's economic modernization program; problems of arms transfers and nuclear proliferation; and the security implications of Asia's growing technological and industrial sophistication. An overview analysis suggests ten choices for a U.S. allied security strategy for the region which will determine the pattern of Asian security relationships in the coming decade. 305 pp. (JD)."--Rand abstracts.

Book Description
Raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current U.S. foreign policy in Asia. During the past three years, U.S. policies of giving top priority to Western Europe, relying on China to counterbalance the Soviet Union in Asia, rearming Japan and transferring modern weapons and economic aid to such states as Pakistan have not effectively dealt with threats of conflict. The foreign policy proposed focuses on the economic and political value of those key noncommunist nations encircling eastern and southern Asia and also India. The contributors agree that America needs a foreign policy that can counter Soviet expansionism and make recommendations toward this goal.

Book Description
This memorandum examines probable US interests in East Asia in the 1980's. The author describes present US policies and suggests possible American options to deal with problems related to Kampuchea, Japanese attitudes toward defense, developments in South Korea, and political instability within certain East Asian nations. American interests in East Asia - economic, political, and strategic - are portrayed as important, particularly if military deployments into the Indian Ocean or Persian Gulf are contemplated, and they are threatened by the growing military forces of the Soviet Navy and Air Force. The author recommends courses of action which, except for the Kampuchean problem, are consistent with recent and current policy. He suggests that a solution to the Kampuchean situation may require American initiatives, including normalization of relations with Hanoi.
