Book Description
Deep in the Desert, an Ancient God is About to Awaken... With Lucy still offline, Lauren and the others are left with no choice but to merge the micro mind they recovered from Area 51 in an attempt to reboot the AI’s systems. They have only just started the procedure when the completed TREENO fleet of CubeSats detects a neutrino burst from a city straight out of myth and legend. Ready for anything, and with Ariel heavily upgraded, the team set off for the source of the signal in the Mauritania region of West Africa. However, during the mission, Eden goes dark and isn’t responding to radio transmissions. What’s happened back at the base? Could it just be a technical problem or has something more sinister happened? Soon cut off in the desert in a blinding sandstorm and without backup, Lauren and Jack encounter a micro mind that will force them to relive the natural disaster that originally destroyed the city. Now the time has come for Lauren to prove herself as a true leader as she’s pulled into a battle beyond space and time. Can she successfully draw upon all the skills of herself and those around her to fight off both threats from the Overseers and from beyond our world? Earth Howl is the sequel to Earth Shout, and is part of the Multiverse Chronicles, an epic series of interlinked stories that follows humanity’s struggle to survive across parallel universes.

Book Description
"Enormously personal and perceptive." —BOOKLIST Commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the reintroduction of wolves to the American West, Howl follows Susan Imhoff Bird's exploration into the passions and controversies surrounding nature's most fascinating predator. At a crossroads in her own life, Bird travels around the West, talking with wolf watchers, landowners, wildlife managers, conservationists, and hunters about their understandings of what matters most, which almost always is their connection with the natural world. However, the often–conflicting issues raised by hunters, ranchers, and politicians prompt Bird's personal examination of wolf science, myths, and ethics, culminating in her conviction that wolves must be allowed to recover and thrive on our lands. Along the way, Bird begins to unleash her own wild nature, learning to howl and inviting us to do the same. SUSAN IMHOFF BIRD finds inspiration in Utah's canyons, valleys, and water–sculpted rock. She can often be found on her bicycle or snowshoes, absorbing the wisdom of the natural world. Bird lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Book Description
In 1999, a seemingly incongruous collection of protestors converged in Seattle to shut down the meetings of the World Trade Organization. Union leaders, environmentalists dressed as endangered turtles, mainstream Christian clergy, violence-advocating anarchists, gay and lesbian activists, and many other diverse groups came together to protest what they saw as the unfair power of a nondemocratic elite. But how did such strange bedfellows come together? And can their unity continue? In 1972--another period of social upheaval--sociologist Colin Campbell posited a "cultic milieu": An underground region where true seekers test hidden, forgotten, and forbidden knowledge. Ideas and allegiances within the milieu change as individuals move between loosely organized groups, but the larger milieu persists in opposition to the dominant culture. Jeffrey Kaplan and Helene Loow find Campbell's theory especially useful in coming to grips with the varied oppositional groups of today. While the issues differ, current subcultures often behave in similar ways to deviant groups of the past. The Cultic Milieu brings together scholars looking at racial, religious and environmental oppositional groups as well as looking at the watchdog groups that oppose these groups in turn. While providing fascinating information on their own subjects, each essay contributes to a larger understanding of our present-day cultic milieu. For classes in the social sciences or religious studies, The Cultic Milieu offers a novel way to look at the interactions and ideas of those who fight against the powerful in our global age.

Book Description
This book explores representations of girlhood and young womanhood in recent English language children's fantasy by focusing on two fantastic body transformation types: invisibility and age-shifting. Drawing on recent feminist and queer theory, the study discusses the tropes of invisibility and age-shifting as narrative devices representing gendered experiences. The transformations offer various perspectives on a girl's changing body and identity and provide links between real-life and fantastic discourses of gender, power, invisibility and aging. The main focus is on English-language fantasy published since the 1970s but the motifs of invisibility and age-shifting in earlier tales and children's books is reviewed; this is the first study of children's fantasy literature that considers these tropes at length. Novels discussed are from both critically acclaimed authors and the less well known. Most of the novels depicting invisible or age-shifting girls are neither thoroughly conventional nor radically subversive but present a range of styles. In terms of gender, children's fantasy novels can be more complex than they are often interpreted to be.

In the summer of 1967, twelve young men ascended Alaska’s Mount McKinley—known to the locals as Denali. Engulfed by a once-in-alifetime blizzard, only five made it back down. Andy Hall, a journalist and son of the park superintendent at the time, was living in the park when the tragedy occurred and spent years tracking down rescuers, survivors, lost documents, and recordings of radio communications. In Denali’s Howl, Hall reveals the full story of the expedition in a powerful retelling that will mesmerize the climbing community as well as anyone interested in mega-storms and man’s sometimes deadly drive to challenge the forces of nature.
