Book Description
CE MEMOIRE PRESENTE UNE ETUDE ESSENTIELLEMENT EXPERIMENTALE DES LASERS BRILLOUIN A FIBRE OPTIQUE UNIMODALE. LA PREMIERE PARTIE PRECISE QUANTITATIVEMENT LES CARACTERISTIQUES DE LA DIFFUSION BRILLOUIN STIMULEE (DBS) DANS LES FIBRES CONSIDEREE COMME UNE INTERACTION NON LINEAIRE RESONNANTE A TROIS ONDES. LE DOPAGE QUI CONFERE A LA FIBRE SA STRUCTURE GUIDANTE MODIFIE AUSSI LOCALEMENT LA CONDITION DE RESONANCE. IL CONVIENT DONC DE DEFINIR UNE AIRE EFFECTIVE SPECIFIQUE PRENANT EN COMPTE LA STRUCTURE TRANSVERSE DE LA FIBRE, CE QUI MENE A UNE NOUVELLE METHODE POUR ELEVER LE SEUIL BRILLOUIN DANS LES FIBRES. UNE NOUVELLE TECHNIQUE DE MESURE DU GAIN BRILLOUIN PRESENTE L'AVANTAGE DE FONCTIONNER EN DEHORS DU REGIME PARAMETRIQUE ; ELLE NECESSITE UNE SEULE SOURCE LASER ET UTILISE EN SON PRINCIPE LES REFLEXIONS SUR LES EXTREMITES DE FIBRE. LA DEUXIEME PARTIE DU MEMOIRE CONCERNE LES SOURCES : LES LASERS BRILLOUIN SONT CONNUS POUR LEUR COHERENCE. NOUS AVONS PU REALISER UN LASER BRILLOUIN A LONGUEUR D'ONDE DE 1,319 M FONCTIONNANT AUSSI BIEN EN REGIME IMPULSIONNEL QUE CONTINU. ON VALIDE AINSI EXPERIMENTALEMENT DANS L'INFRAROUGE LES PREDICTIONS THEORIQUES ET NUMERIQUES DU MODELE COHERENT A TROIS ONDES, NOTAMMENT LA BIFURCATION DU REGIME MIROIR VERS LE REGIME IMPULSIONNEL. L'UTILISATION D'UN CIRCULATEUR OPTIQUE A PERMIS LA SIMPLIFICATION DU MONTAGE ET DE L'EMPLOI DU LASER BRILLOUIN EN ANNEAU "TOUT FIBRE". A L'AIDE DE DISPOSITIFS INTEGRES NOUS AVONS OBTENU UN BON ACCORD QUALITATIF ET QUANTITATIF POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS ENTRE LA THEORIE ET L'EXPERIENCE. LES IMPULSIONS SOLITONIQUES OBSERVEES PEUVENT ETRE SUB- OU SUPRALUMINIQUE ET PRESENTENT UNE DISSYMETRIE QUI AUGMENTE AVEC LA FINESSE DE LA CAVITE. ON RETROUVE EXPERIMENTALEMENT LE LIEN RECEMMENT ETABLIE ANALYTIQUEMENT ENTRE LA VITESSE DE L'IMPULSION ET LA PENTE DE SON FRONT AVANT. POUR LES GRANDES FINESSES, SEULS LES REGIMES IMPULSIONNEL ET CONTINU SONT STABLES, LE REGIME OSCILLATOIRE N'EST QU'UN TRANSITOIRE PLUS OU MOINS LENT.

Book Description
An internationally famous physicist and electrical engineer, the author of this text was a pioneer in the investigation of gravitational waves. Joseph Weber's General Relativity and Gravitational Waves offers a classic treatment of the subject. Appropriate for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this text remains ever relevant. Brief but thorough in its introduction to the foundations of general relativity, it also examines the elements of Riemannian geometry and tensor calculus applicable to this field. Approximately a quarter of the contents explores theoretical and experimental aspects of gravitational radiation. The final chapter focuses on selected topics related to general relativity, including the equations of motion, unified field theories, Friedman's solution of the cosmological problem, and the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. Exercises. Index.

Book Description
Research advances in III-nitride semiconductor materials and device have led to an exponential increase in activity directed towards electronic and optoelectronic applications. There is also great scientific interest in this class of materials because they appear to form the first semiconductor system in which extended defects do not severely affect the optical properties of devices. The volume consists of chapters written by a number of leading researchers in nitride materials and device technology with the emphasis on the dopants incorporations, impurities identifications, defects engineering, defects characterization, ion implantation, irradiation-induced defects, residual stress, structural defects and phonon confinement. This unique volume provides a comprehensive review and introduction of defects and structural properties of GaN and related compounds for newcomers to the field and stimulus to further advances for experienced researchers. Given the current level of interest and research activity directed towards nitride materials and devices, the publication of the volume is particularly timely. Early pioneering work by Pankove and co-workers in the 1970s yielded a metal-insulator-semiconductor GaN light-emitting diode (LED), but the difficulty of producing p-type GaN precluded much further effort. The current level of activity in nitride semiconductors was inspired largely by the results of Akasaki and co-workers and of Nakamura and co-workers in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the development of p-type doping in GaN and the demonstration of nitride-based LEDs at visible wavelengths. These advances were followed by the successful fabrication and commercialization of nitride blue laser diodes by Nakamura et al at Nichia. The chapters contained in this volume constitutes a mere sampling of the broad range of research on nitride semiconductor materials and defect issues currently being pursued in academic, government, and industrial laboratories worldwide.
