Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi incorporates an analytical study of Vivaldi's style into a more general exploration of harmonic and tonal organization in the music of the late Italian Baroque. The harmonic and tonal language of Vivaldi and his contemporaries, full of curious links between traditional modal thinking and what would later be considered common-practice major-minor tonality, directly reflects the historical circumstances of the shifting attitude toward the conceptualization of tonal space so crucial to Western art music. Vivaldi is examined in a completely new context, allowing both his prosaic and idiosyncratic sides to emerge clearly. This title was first published in 2002: Burghley House, Stamford, was built between 1555 and 1587 for William Cecil, Lord Burghley, the Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. The library there contains an extensive collection of manuscript and printed music dating from about 1650 to 1850, substantially formed during the latter part of the 18th century by the Ninth Earl of Exeter. The collection is given particular significance by the inclusion of several rare and in some cases apparently unique volumes. This catalogue examines the Burghley House music collection in the light of contemporary documentary evidence. The opening section describes the people who added to the collection and their musical enthusiasms. This approach brings the collection to life and also enables us to appreciate emergent trends in British music history of the period. With each entry fully described and the printed music referenced to RISM or CPM, this catalogue should form a valuable reference source for all scholars of British music from the 17th to the 19th century.

Now better known for his collections of Scottish tunes with variations, William McGibbon (16961756) was the best-known and most popular violinist-composer in Edinburgh in the eighteenth century. His three volumes of trio sonatasone of which survives only in fragmentary formcombine fluidity of writing with Corellian influence. The 1729 set was the first music published in Scotland for the transverse flute, and its sixth trio sonata features virtuosic violin writing as well. This edition contains twelve trio sonatas, six solo sonatas, six flute duets, and the surviving first flute part of the fragmentary third volume of trio sonatas.
