Mössbauer Spectroscopy in Materials Science
Author: Marcel Miglierini
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401145482
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 443
Book Description
Material science is one of the most evolving fields of human activities. Invention and consequent introduction of new materials for practical and/or technological purposes requires as complete knowledge of the physical, chemical, and structural properties as possible to ensure proper and optimal usage of their new features. In order to understand the macroscopic behaviour, one has to search for their origin on a microscopic level. A good deal of microscopic information can be obtained through hyperfine interactions. Mossbauer spectroscopy offers a unique possibility for hyperfine interaction studies via probing the nearest order of resonant atoms. Materials which contain the respective isotope as one of the constituent elements (e.g., iron, tin, ... ) but also those which even do not contain them can be investigated. In the latter case, the probe atoms are incorporated into the material of interest in minor quantities (ca. 0.1 at. %) to act as probes on a nuclear level. This Workshop has covered the most evolving topics in the field of Mossbauer spectroscopy applied to materials science. During four working days, SO participants from 19 countries discussed the following areas: Chemisliy, Mineralogy and Metallurgy, Artificia/~y Structured Materials, Nanosized Materials and Quasicrvstals. and Experimental Techniques and Data Processing. A total of 42 contributions (30 keynote talks) reviewed the current state of art of the method, its applications for technical purposes, as well as trends and perspectives. A total of 39 papers are included in the present volume. Applications in Chemisfr\'.

Chromium and Chromium Alloys
Author: D. J. Maykuth
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Chromium
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
Various alloying additions have been discovered which render unalloyed chromium much less susceptible to low-temperature embrittlement as well as to nitridation in air at elevated temperatures. These include additions of the Group IIIA metals, magnesia, and carbides based on the Groups IVA and VA metals. Of these additions, only the carbides contribute significantly to the hot strengthening of chromium. The combination of selected carbides and solid-solution-strengthening elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, and/or tantalum, has resulted in experimental alloys which retain useful strengths at temperatures through 1316 C (2400 F). These high strengths are achieved at some sacrifice in the low-temperature ductility of chromium. Also, despite the improvements afforded in the oxidation and nitridation resistance of chromium through alloying, no alloys are available which are capable of service in long-time exposures in air above 982 C (1800 F) without suffering some property degradation.

Book Description
The general and pitting corrosion resistance of a selection of alloys based on a composition of Fe-40Cr were studied. These alloys have been investigated for corrosion resistant applications, specifically by microalloying with platinum group metals (PGM) to induce cathodic modification. The corrosion environments considered were a 10 per cent H2SO4 solution, and a synthetic mine water containing 500 ppm Cl(-) + 300 ppm SO4(2-). The effects of three metallurgical variables on the localized corrosion processes were investigated, these being: prestraining by cold work to increase the strain energy; recovery annealing to give a dislocation substructure; and alloying with 0,2 weight per cent ruthenium. Prestraining by cold deformation of approximately 5 per cent does not impair the passivity or pitting resistance. However, a recovered dislocation substructure promotes localized attack which destabilizes the passivity in a reducing acid medium. The addition of the cathodic element ruthenium increases the resistance to localized attack, but promotes restoration by recovery at the normal recrystallization temperature, forcing a loss of corrosion resistance. The alloys all exhibit excellent pitting resistance in the chloride environment.
