Book Description
"Refreshing and eloquent" – Libby Purves, The Times "Quin's acute powers of observation vividly convey the hinterland of the modern general hospital ... A medical memoir for the Trainspotting generation." – The Tablet *** Surgeons cut, but physicians... what do physicians actually do? And is it true that other doctors really call them 'the magicians'? John Quin worked for thirty-three years as a physician for the NHS in both Scotland and England, specialising in endocrinology. Days on the wards were uproariously funny one minute, infinitely tragic the next. Starting with a stern lesson from the president of the British Society of Gastroenterologists that the younger doctor was not 'a f****** comedian', Dr Quin, Medicine Man is packed with vividly told tales of the joy and reward of getting the diagnosis right, the disaster of getting it wrong. Darkly amusing and with a keen eye for the absurd, this sharply observed memoir is not only an acute insight into the farcical frustrations and tensions of working in a chronically underfunded system but also a timely reminder of the humanity of the NHS staff who care for us.

Book Description
This two-hour CBS movie from the much-loved series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman depicts the long-anticipated wedding of Dr. Michaela Quinn (Jane Seymour) to mountain man Byron Sully (Joe Lando). Any show that features the marriage of the two lead characters has built-in appeal, and this one is no exception. The wedding of Dr. Mike and Sully is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to the tiny frontier town of Colorado Springs. The time is 1870, as the attractive period sets and costumes attest. The charming scene in which the very first train--an adorable steam locomotive--pulls into the town's brand- new station will delight train buffs, and the appearance of historical figure General George Custer ups the story's action quotient. The show doesn't strive for strict accuracy, however. Its tone resembles a historical romance novel, without the bodice-ripping. Like Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn glorifies the traditional American family values of a simpler, bygone era. Yet the script also incorporates modern-day concerns. (Dr. Mike doesn't want to change her name after marriage, and Sully won't wear a wedding ring.) One theme of the movie is timeless: what to do about meddling relatives when planning a wedding.

Amanda Carlyle has been searching for Fred, her fathers former best friend, for two years. Not sure of what she expects to find on the other side of the motel room door, Amanda knocks, knowing she must face Fred in order to uncover the truth about what killed her father nearly twelve years ago. Was it really a hunting accident as Fred had told the police? Or was it something so evil that Fred has been crippled by the horrific memories ever since? But Amanda needs to knowone way or the otherand demands to know the real story behind the fatal events. With Freds reluctant retelling comes hints of a heritage he has tried to ignore, the pull of the fiddles, and the realization that he must finally send back the evil he and his friends accidentally released long ago.
