Book Description
Excerpt from Dombey and Son, Vol. 3 Dawn, with its passionless blank face, steals shiver ing to the church beneath which lies the dust of little Paul and his mother, and looks in at the windows. It is cold and dark. Night crouches yet, upon the pave ment, and broods, sombre and heavy, in nooks and cor ners of the building. The steeple-clock, perched up above the houses, emerging from beneath another of the countless ripples in the tide of time that regularly roll and break on the eternal shore, is grayly visible, like a stone beacon, recording how the sea flows on but within doors, dawn, at first, can only peep at night, and see that it is there. Book Description
Excerpt from Dombey and Son If any of them have felt a sorrow in one of the principal incidents on which this fiction turns, I hope it may be a sorrow of that sort which endears the sharers in it, one to another. This is not unselfish in me. I may claim to have felt it, at least as much on anybody else; and I would fain be remembered kindly for my part in the experience. Book Description
Paul Dombey is a cold, unbending, pompous merchant, and a widower with two children - Paul and Florence. His chief ambition is to perpetuate the firm-name. He dreams of passing his business on to his son. Dombey dotes on his son, and neglects and mistreats his daughter. The "son" in the title of the book is incapable of ever joining the firm. A sickly and odd child, Paul dies at the age of six. Dombey pours his resentment and anger out on his daughter, whom he pushes away despite her efforts to earn her father's love.Eventually Dombey remarries, after literally acquiring his new wife from her father in a commercial transaction. Dombey is as bad a husband as he is a father and his marriage is loveless. His new bride hates Dombey and eventually runs off with Canker, his business manager. Dombey characteristically blames Florence for this reversal, and strikes her, causing Florence to run away as well.Abandoned by everyone, Dombey loses his business and goes half insane, living in his decaying house. Dombey is eventually reconciled to his daughter, who always a doormat forgives her father........

Book Description
Excerpt from Dombey and Son, Vol. 1 I make so bold as to believe that the faculty (or the habit) of closely and carefully observing the characters of men is a rare one. I have not even found, within my experience, that the faculty (or the habit) of closely and carefully observing so much as the faces of men is a general one by any means. The two commonest mistakes in judgment that I suppose to arise from the former default are, the confounding of shyness with arrogance, and the not understanding that an obstinate nature exists in a perpetual struggle with itself. Book Description
Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2 of 3: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation The major no sooner heard the voice than he relinquished Mr. Dombey's arm, darted forward, took the hand Of the lady in the chair, and pressed it to his lips. With no less gallantry the major folded both his gloves upon his heart, and bowed low to the other lady. And now, the chair having stopped, the motive power became visible in the Shape of a flushed page pushing behind, who seemed to have in part outgrown and in part outpushed his strength, for when he stood upright he was tall, and wan, and thin, and his plight appeared the more forlorn from his having injured the shape of his hat, by butting at the carriage with his head to urge it forward, as is sometimes done by elephants in Oriental countries. Book Description
Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2: Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation The Major, more bluedfaced and staring - more -ripe, as it Were, than ever - and giving vent, every now and then, to one of the horse's coughs, not so much of necessity as in a spbntaheous explosion of importance, walked arm in arm with Mr. Dombey up the sunny side of the way, with'his cheeks veiling over his tight stock, his legs majesticl ally wide apart, and his great head wagging from side to side, as if he were remonstrating within himself on being such a captivating object. They had not walked many yards, before the Major encountered somebody he knew, nor 'many yards farther before the Major encountered somebody else he knew, but he merely shook his fingers at them as he passed, and led Mr. Dombey on pointing out the localities as they went, and enlivening the walls with any current scandal suggested by them. Book Description
Excerpt from Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 4 All is going on as it was wont. The waves are hoarse with repetition of their mystery; the dust lies piled upon the shore; the sea birds soar and hover; the winds and clouds go forth upon their trackless flight the white arms beckon, in the moonlight, to the invisible country far away. With a tender melancholy pleasure, Florence finds herself again on the Old ground so sadly trodden, yet so happily, and thinks of him in the quiet place, where he and she have many and many a time con versed together, with the water welling up about his couch. And now, as she sits pensive there, she hears, in the wild low murmur of the sea, his little story told again, his very words repeated; and finds that all her life and hopes, and griefs, since - in the solitary house, and in the pageant it has changed to - have a portion in the burden of the marvellous song. Book Description
Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2 of 2: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation; With the Original Illustrations Dawn, with its passionless blank face, steals shivering to the church beneath which lies the dust of little Paul and his mother, and looks in at the windows. It is cold and dark. Night crouches yet, upon the pavement, and broods, sombre and heavy, in nooks and corners of the building. The steeple clock, perched up above the houses, emerging from beneath another of the countless ripples in the tide of time that regularly roll and break on the eternal shore, is greyly visible, like a stone beacon, recording how the sea flows on; but within doors, dawn, at first, can only peep at night, and see that it is there. Hovering feebly round the church, and looking in, dawn moans and weeps for its short reign, and its tears trickle on the window-glass, and the trees against the church-wall bow their heads, and wring their many hands in sympathy. Night, growing pale before it, gradually fades out of the church, but lingers in the vaults below, and sits upon the coffins. And now comes bright day, burnishing the steeple-clock, and reddening the spire, and drying up the tears of dawn, and stifling its complaining; and the scared dawn, following the night, and chasing it from its last refuge, shrinks into the vaults itself and hides, with a frightened face, among the dead, until night returns, refreshed, to drive it out.
