Despite the research that supports interprofessional education as a component to delivering optimal medical care, many education programs still provide minimal exposure and interaction during student training. This study used a pre/post-test design using a validated questionnaire and post-simulation student reflections to describe the effect of an interprofessional simulation experience on dietetic student perceptions of teamwork and decision-making, understanding roles of healthcare professionals, and self- efficacy for providing patient care. Two-tailed paired-sample t-tests assessed questionnaire items and demonstrated that students felt that learning with other students will increase effectiveness of the health care team (p=0.032); that shared learning with other health professions will increase their ability to problem-solve (p=0.017); and that shared learning will help them become better clinicians (p=0.018). There was a significant increase in support of small group projects (p=0.027) and generic lectures, tutorials, or workshops (p=0.006) shared with other health sciences students. Medical errors that result in adverse and sentinel events are linked to ineffective communication between providers and members of the healthcare team. Healthcare organizations have enacted multiple strategies to lower the intradisciplinary communication errors. However, this remains an area for ongoing improvements because lecture and clinical practice may be ineffective methods to teach communication. Communication errors, which are considered preventable, are now noted as one of the top three leading causes of deaths in the United States. In healthcare education, high-fidelity simulation has been acknowledged as an innovative methodology. However, there is a lack of evidence that deals with the effectiveness of teaching communication through simulation. The purpose of this research study was to examine healthcare students’ communication self-efficacy with the use of a high-fidelity simulation intervention with an interprofessional group of students compared to a control group of intraprofessional students. The sample consisted of 22 senior level healthcare students in nursing, respiratory, and allied health programs randomly selected at a health sciences college. With institutional review board approval, a randomized controlled trial was conducted using a modified version of the Communication Skills Perceptions Questionnaire to assess healthcare students’ communication self-efficacy, communication skills, and behavior pre- and post-simulation intervention with both groups.

"Interprofessional education is considered a form of collaborative and interactive learning with, from, and about other healthcare professions for the purpose of improving teamwork and patient outcomes. This quality improvement project was implemented to determine if standardized simulation enhanced collaborative communication and teamwork among senior nursing students. Fifty-two senior pre-licensure nursing students actively participated in a simulation that utilized standardized patients. Each student entered the simulation independently and had to assess the situation and identify the needs of the patient. Once they did, they had to call the appropriate interprofessional team member and provide a brief synopsis of the situation and what they were recommending. Immediately following the scenario, the individual students were debriefed about their performance. The participants were asked to complete two surveys both pre- and post-simulation that focused on teamwork and collaboration. A means comparison of each question item within the four constructs was done for the TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T-TAQ). In addition, a paired T-test comparing pre- and post-simulation was calculated for each of the constructs found in the T-TAQ survey. The paired T-tests showed a significant difference in all four constructs which indicated that standardized simulation can improve students' self-efficacy related to collaborative communication and attitudes regarding teamwork. Also, a means comparison was done for the two constructs found on the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Collaboration (JeffSATIC). Simulation that demands an interprofessional collaborative approach is an innovative teaching and learning strategy offering much promise. Simulation has rarely been used or studied in the dietetics profession, despite its beneficial effects on students and its widespread usage in other healthcare disciplines including nursing and medicine. This study examined the effect of simulation training on dietetics students' self-efficacy before supervised clinical practice. A pretest-posttest design was conducted during the fall of the 2015-2016 (n=20) and 2016-2017 (n=22) academic years. Students completed 120 hours of simulation training with manikin (SimMan) under the supervision of a panel of three Registered Dietitians. Ten previously validated case studies were used for the simulation training. Using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a statistically significant increase in students’ median self-efficacy, following the simulation course, was observed. This study supports the use of simulation training with dietetics students to prepare them for supervised clinical practice.

National healthcare organizations recommend innovative educational initiatives and fundamental changes in the way healthcare providers are educated. Educational strategies that incorporate collaboration have been shown to impact professional behaviors and competency. Improved student attitudes toward collaboration and increased understanding of professional roles are impacted by exposure to simulation and interprofessional education. The purpose of the Interprofessional Simulation Project was to determine whether the type of clinical simulation experience (traditional versus interprofessional) influences nursing students' knowledge and performance of skilled communication. Additionally, the project investigated attitudes toward collaboration in an educational setting. A quantitative pretest and posttest design was utilized to examine changes in knowledge of skilled communication and investigate attitudes toward collaboration. A comparative posttest only design was used to examine differences in skilled communication performance between the traditional and interprofessional simulation groups. Senior nursing students were divided into two groups for simulation: a traditional group and an interprofessional education (IPE) group. Surgical resident physicians interfaced with the nursing students during the IPE portion of the simulations and debrief sessions. The IPE simulation intervention elicited statistically significant changes in skilled communication knowledge over time. There was no statistically significant difference between the simulation groups on skilled communication performance. Significant differences in motivation and utility, and understanding of key team communication skills were realized as a result of the IPE team simulation training. The results from this project add to the evidence for enhancing IPE team training of healthcare providers to increase understanding of the benefits and application of standardized team communication skills.
