Book Description
This manual has been designed to assist and guide trainers and facilitators to deliver the Wildlife Judicial and Prosecutorial Assistance Training (WJPAT) module for DNA Forensics First Responder Training. Law enforcers are always dealing with wildlife crime scenes involving biological matter than may require DNA forensic analysis. Unfortunately, their training does not prepare them to handle DNA evidence and this may lead to mishandling of evidence which eventually leads to loss of crucial evidence and acquittals of offenders. Training is therefore key in ensuring that law enforcers are able to properly handle DNA evidence. The training goes beyond handling DNA evidence and addresses wildlife crime, crime scene investigation and admissibility of evidence. In addition, the value of this training can be related to specific outcomes such as properly worked case files, prosecution-guided investigations, appropriate sentencing and ultimately deterrence of wildlife offenders. The manual contains modules that have specific objectives which shape the training program into four incremental tiers from understanding the basics of DNA forensics and dynamics of wildlife crime to ultimately presenting DNA evidence in court and securing convictions. It covers four sub-modules under the DNA Forensics First Responder Training. Each sub-module addresses a separate theme that will result in enhanced DNA forensic evidence handling. Each module is further divided into topics and under each topic there are sub-topics that address specific subjects to be delivered to the trainees. Trainers should adopt and adjust the topics and sub-topics to suit the needs of the trainees. The manual is dynamic and will keep being enhanced and improved depending on the needs of the trainees and the lessons learnt during trainings. The manual therefore hopes to achieve a practical, participatory and experiential training.

Book Description
Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
