Romanticism and the Androgynous Sublime
Author: Warren Stevenson
Publisher: Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
ISBN: 9780838636688
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
This book studies and articulates the emergence from the poetical subtext of six major English romantics of "the androgynous sublime", a mode that conflates the motif of psychic androgyny (traceable as far back as the Book of Genesis and Plato's Symposium) with the mode of sublimity, first discussed by Longinus and much debated from the eighteenth century onward. Frequently echoed by the romantic poets, Milton's description of the Holy Spirit's role in the creation of the world is androgynous. Since humane creativity mirrors divine creativity, it follows that the artist qua artist muct also be androgynous - that is, endowed with what Lyrical Ballads, calls "a more comprehensive soul" than is "supposed to be common among mankind". Characterized by a flexuous, limber style and an association with androgynous subject matter, the androgynous sublime subverts conventional notions of sublimity while offering a more comprehensive model with which to supplement, of non supplant, them. The methodology of this study is to present a "counter-deconstructive" reading of the text and, where applicable, designs of Blake, as well as the poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats, seen from this somewhat novel but not ignoble perspective.

Book Description
La Florida del Inca (Lisbon, 1605) is a key text in the history and culture of the Americas. In this chronicle, its author, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, born in Cuzco, the son of an Inca princess and a Spanish conquistador, offers a unique representation of Hernando de Soto's expedition (1539-43) to the vast territory then known as La Florida. The studies collected here analyze the period of early contact in La Florida, study the chronicle of the Cuzcan writer and the works that influenced it, with the objective of affirming its central place in colonial, cultural, and transatlantic studies and its importance in understanding the intertwined history of the Americas. An introduction, a chronology, a general bibliography, and fifty-six images offer a frame for these sections. The various essays are written in a direct manner, and are free of jargon with the aim of attracting both general and academic readers. Author: Laurence J. Silberstein
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814779905
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 483
Book Description
Cultural boundaries and group identity are often forged in relation to the Other. In every society, conceptions of otherness, which often reflect a group's fears and vulnerabilities, result in deep-rooted traditions of inclusion and exclusion that permeate the culture's literature, religion, and politics. This volume explores the ways in which Jews have traditionally defined other groups and, in turn, themselves. The contributors, a distinguished international group of scholars, explore the discursive processss through which Jewish identity and culture have been constructed, disseminated, and perpetuated. Among the topics addressed are: Others in the biblical world; the construction of gender in Roman-period Judaism; the Other as woman in the Greco-Roman world; the gentile as Other in rabbinic law; the feminine as Other in kabbalah; the reproduction of the Other in the Passover Haggadah; the Palestinian Arab as Other in Israeli politics and literature; the Other in Levinas and Derrida; Blacks as Other in American Jewish literature; the Jewish body image as symbol of Otherness; and women as Other in Israeli cinema.
