Book Description
This ground-breaking book provides the first English-language survey of economic thought in modern Japan. Significantly, it offers both a detailed study of economic thought from 1600 to 1945 and a nuanced analysis of Western and Asian perspectives on the field of Japanese economic history. Expertly translated from Japanese and written by leading scholars in the field, this exciting study includes: * A novel approach to economic thought which contextualizes the core values of thinkers across the period * A comparative analysis of Japanese economic history which looks at the continuities across the Meiji divide * The extensive use of archival sources, many of which were previously unavailable in English A History of Economic Thought in Japan, 1600 - 1945 serves as a case study of how Western economic ideas spread to non-Western regions and interacted with indigenous ideas. It will therefore be of immense value to both scholars of economic thought and those seeking a deeper understanding of the moral, intellectual, and societal forces that shaped modern Japan.

Book Description
Institutional and technological change is a highly topical subject. At the theoretical level, there is much debate in the field of institutional economics about the role of technological change in endogenous growth theory. At a practical policy level, arguments rage about how Japan and the Japanese economy should plan for the future. In this book, leading economists and economic historians of Japan examine a range of key issues concerning institutional and technological change in Japan, rigorously using discipline-based tools of analysis, and drawing important conclusions as to how the process of change in these areas actually works. In applying these ideas to Japan, the writers in this volume are focusing on an issue which is currently being much debated in the country itself, and are helping our understanding of the world’s second-largest economy.

Book Description
Japanese scholars of economics present nine contributions addressing the development of economic thought and modernization in Japan, primarily over the last 150 years. The contributions begin with discussion of several currents of economic thought during the Tokugawa period, which represented the intellectual prerequisites of modern economic growth in Japan. Developments in the Meiji era, the interwar period, and economic thought after 1945 are then explored, followed by Marxian and non-Marxian approaches to economic development and the political economy, and an essay on the considerable influence of Adam Smith on Japanese economics during and after WWII. Book Description
David Ricardo’s theories were introduced in fragments in Japan after the Meiji restoration of 1868 and his work came into prominence late in comparison to other major thinkers figuring in the history of economic thought. The book seeks to analyse the studies in Japan from the year 1920 to the end of the 1930s – during the time before the outbreak of the Second World War, when even the study of classical economics became difficult. The book covers different aspects of his works and contains elements which may be interesting to foreign and even Japanese readers today without necessarily coming under the influence of Marx’s reading. It presents works on Ricardo that are at present, wholly unknown to the Ricardo scholars and more generally to the historians of economic thought outside Japan. This book is an essential read on the history of economic thought in Japan.

Book Description
This study is an English translation of Gendai kinken shi (The Power of Money inModern Japanese History), written in Japanese by Yamaji Aizan (1865-1917) and published as abook in 1908 by Hattori Shoten and Bunsendō. Yamaji Aizan was one of the most influentialintellectual figures during the Meiji period. Born as the son of samurai, he became a journalist, wrote many articles and books that shaped the public sphere in a variety of fields such as politics, economy, and current events. In Gendai kinken shi, Yamaji details the history of modern Japan, especially the relationship between politics and the fugō, the rich men who emerged during theMeiji government's promotion of industry. He describes how these fugō (e.g., Iwasaki Yatarō,the founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, a financial conglomerate) developed political connections, ultimately controlling politics and arguably having more power than politicians themselves.Yamaji critiques these fugō, characterizing them as modern Japan's new daimyo or feudal lords. He argues that fugō should spend their money on behalf of the common people, not onthemselves, and that this must be accomplished through an intervention of the government. Thisis what Yamaji calls, "a unit of community" (seikatsu kyōdōtai). Gendai kinken shi is a pioneerwork of economics and a classic text regarding the theory of the fugō during the Meiji period. While Yamaji is an important figure in the history of modern Japan, the English-languageliterature written discussing his contribution to Japan's intellectual and economic history arelimited, with very few English translations of his original works. This study seeks to restore thiscritical voice to the English-language historiography of the economic theory and intellectualhistory of Meiji Japan by providing Western scholars with an English translation of YamajiAizan's influential work, Gendai kinken shi.
