En 1872 el Dr. Berlin introdujo el neologismo dislexia, desde entonces este trastorno ha sido abordado por médicos, psicólogos, pedagogos, educadores... Cientos de investigadores y millones de padres la han tratado en diferente grado; los primeros dejando constancia de sus estudios a través de artículos y libros y los segundos enfrentándose con cierto desconocimiento y escasos recursos ante una particular forma de ser de sus hijos. En este libro, dos biólogos que se han especializado en neurociencias, tras una meticulosa revisión bibliográfica, han condensado en menos de 300 páginas aspectos básicos sobre el lenguaje, la escritura y la dislexia. Se citan y discuten interesantes enfoques que diferentes investigadores han propuesto a lo largo de la breve, pero intensa, historia del estudio de la dislexia. Con el texto resultante se pretende que padres, educadores e investigadores del trastorno tengan una herramienta de fácil manejo para entender la situación conceptual actual de la dislexia desde el punto de vista anatómico, fisiológico, cognitivo, genético, rehabilitador... Atractivas resultan las conclusiones a que llegan los autores, que como corolario aportan una nueva definición del trastorno: La dislexia es un trastorno que provoca dificultades para la lectura en algunos individuos intelectualmente aptos y social y educativamente bien dotados; que por condicionantes genéticos y ambientales tienen distribuciones y conexiones neuronales, que sin ser patológicas, son deficitarias o insuficientes para desarrollar plenamente una nueva capacidad humana: la lecto-escritura.
