Book Description
What do Shakespeare, salmon, sled dogs and the Queen of England have in common? They all play a part in Canadian life, and they are just a few of the topics covered in this book. Taking its name from the one-dollar and two-dollar coins in Canadian currency, Loonies and Toonies provides a well-rounded view of the country's past and present. This virtual tour briefs children on the metric system, as well as on Canada's ceremonial link to the British monarchy. En route, they'll be inspired by stories of Terry Fox's courageous run for cancer research and the undefeated record of the Bluenose sailing schooner. Before the trip ends, they'll also discover why its not a good idea to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel!

Book Description
Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the east coast of Canda, Prince Edward Island measures only 5,660 sq.km. But what this island province lacks in size, it more than makes up for in abundant natural beauty, as well the scope of its influence on Candian history. Combing poetry with informational text, PEI Poet Laureate Hugh MacDonald pays homage to the province's natural splendors and proud history. Readers young and old can visit the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery of Anne of Green Gables fame, stroll the streets of historic Charlottetown, or paddle a kayak down the island's nearly 100 named rivers.

Book Description
Regional resource disparities and the tensions they generate are a perennial Canadian topic. This edition of Canada: The State of the Federation presents essays on regions, resources, and the resiliency of the Canadian federal system. Contributors consider questions such as: to what extent do Canada’s natural resource industries benefit the Canadian economy? Do Canada’s federal institutions hinder or promote the ability of the economy to respond to global economic shifts? Do current intergovernmental structures allow for constructive dialogue about national policy issues? In responding to these and related questions, many of the authors touch on energy issues. Others consider the importance of functional institutions in a federal or multilevel context as an essential requirement for the effective resolution of issues. Together, the volume raises questions about the relationship of state and society, the importance of identity, trust, and moral legitimacy for the operation of our federal institutions, and the extent to which federal institutions are reinforced or placed under stress by societal structures. The theme of this volume was triggered by Richard Simeon, the outstanding scholar of federalism who passed away in October 2013, and it is dedicated in his honour.
