El objetivo de esta tesis es demostrar que los factores sociales ejercen una influencia importante en los procesos de salud y enfermedad, en concreto en la evolución del embarazo con la posible aparición de patologías y en el crecimiento y desarrollo del niño durante el primer año de vida. Se estudian dos poblaciones, una dependiente de la otra. La primera la constituyen 663 gestantes que fueron a parir al Hospital 12 de Octubre durante un periodo de ocho meses, y la segunda, dependiente de la anterior, que incluye 300 niños a los que se realizó seguimiento durante el primer año de vida. En ambas se recogieron datos relacionados con los factores sociodemográficos, hábitos de vida y de comportamiento, procedentes de la historia clínica, de un cuestionario individualizado unido al seguimiento longitudinal que se utilizó para el análisis de la segunda muestra (300 niños). Dicho seguimiento se llevó a cabo mediante llamadas telefónicas realizadas al mes, dos, tres, seis, nueve y doce meses. Se recogió información sobre peso, talla, alimentación y problemas relacionados con la salud. Como resultado de los mismos, se observa que factores como condición socioeconómica, nivel de estudios y ocupación de la madre tienen una clara influencia tanto en el desarrollo del embarazo como en determinadas patologías relacionadas con la gestación. Así mismo, ejercen una influencia determinante en el parto, provocando parto pretérmino o dificultando el parto normal, con una mayor presencia de cesáreas. Estos factores influyen en el desarrollo y crecimiento del niño en su primer año de vida.

Falciparum malaria continues to be an important health problem on the American continent. Although transmission is now mainly confined to geographic zones lying between latitudes 15 degrees N and 15 degrees S, there has been a resurgence of the disease during the past decade in many parts of the Region. It has occurred in countries where the transmission of malaria had previously been interrupted and in countries where intensive antimalarial activities are in progress, as well as in countries where vigorous antimalarial efforts are not being pursued. In the XXX Report on the Status of Malaria Programs in the Americas, presented at the XXI Pan American Sanitary Conference held in Washington, DC, in September 1982, four main reasons were given for the deteriorating malaria situation: 1. Technical problems associated with the development of vector resistance to insecticides and of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to 4-aminoquinoline drugs. 2. Problems encountered with intensive inter- and intracountry movement of people. 3. Problems of shrinking resources caused by rising personnel, equipment, and supply costs. 4. Problems related to sociopolitical and human factors. The objectives of this workshop were to review the status of falciparum malaria in the different regions of the American continent, to indentify constraints to effective control of the disease, to review current knowledge regarding drug resistance in falciparum malaria, and to identify appropriate measures and research projects that would improve the epidemiological assessment and control of falciparum malaria in various areas of this continent. - Introduction.

Much like the United States, the countries of Western Europe have experienced massive immigration in the last three decades. Spain, in particular, has been transformed from an immigrant-exporting country to one receiving hundreds of thousands of new immigrants. Today, almost 13 percent of the country’s population is foreign-born. Spanish Legacies, written by internationally known experts on immigration, explores how the children of immigrants—the second generation—are coping with the challenges of adaptation to Spanish society, comparing their experiences with those of their peers in the United States. Using a rich data set based on both survey and ethnographic material, Spanish Legacies describes the experiences of growing up by the large population of second-generation youths in Spain and the principal outcomes of the process—from national self-identification and experiences of discrimination to educational attainment and labor-market entry. The study is based on a sample of almost 7,000 second-generation students who were interviewed in Madrid and Barcelona in 2008 and then followed and re-interviewed four years later. A survey of immigrant parents, a replacement sample for lost respondents in the second survey, and a survey of native-parentage students complement this rich data set. Outcomes of the adaptation process in Spain are systematically presented in five chapters, introduced by real-life histories of selected respondents drawn by the study’s ethnographic module. Systematic comparisons with results from the United States show a number of surprising similarities in the adaptation of children of immigrants in both countries, as well as differences marked by contrasting experiences of discrimination, self-identities, and ambition.
