This research study examined the difference in job satisfaction of critical care nurses based on their level of education and unit of practice. Sixty-six registered nurses practicing in either an intensive or step down critical care unit participated in the study. Participants completed a survey packet, including a demographic tool and the Job Satisfaction Survey. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze demographic data. No statistically significant results were found between unit of practice, level of education, and overall job satisfaction score; however, a comparison of means revealed that older nurses working in intensive care units with less education reported higher levels of job satisfaction. A comparison of means also revealed nurses working in intensive care units reported the overall highest levels of job satisfaction. Diploma-prepared nurses also reported higher levels of job satisfaction, followed by associate degree nurses, and then baccalaureate nurses.
