Book Description
Food manufacturers, researchers and society in general are increasingly highly interested in the quality and origin of food products. Considering the complexity of the food chain in a globalized world — where many players are involved between production and consumption — fraudulent food manipulation and adulteration practices are increasingly easier to conduct without being detected. Generally, food adulteration is carried out to increase volume, to mask the presence of inferior quality components, and to replace authentic substances for the seller's economic gain. Analytical methodologies to guarantee food integrity and authenticity are therefore required.Chromatographic and Related Separation Techniques in Food Integrity and Authenticity — Volume A: Advances in Chromatographic Techniques addresses fraud prevention and the latest chromatographic and related separation analytical techniques to guarantee food integrity and authenticity by giving special attention to relevant authenticity issues in food production.Chromatographic and Related Separation Techniques in Food Integrity and Authenticity — Volume B: Relevant Applications addresses the relevant application of techniques to assess different food products' integrity and authenticity.

Book Description
Over the past few years, increasing attention has been paid to the search for bioactive compounds from natural sources. The success of plant-derived products such as paclitaxel (Taxol) in tumor therapy or artemisinin in the treatment of malaria has provided the impetus for the introduction of numerous research programmes, especially in Industry. A great deal of effort is being expended in the generation of novel lead molecules of vegetable, marine and microbial origin by the use of high throughput screening protocols. When interesting hits are found, it is essen tial to have methods available for the rapid isolation of target compounds. For this reason, both industry and academia need efficient preparative chromatographic separation techniques and experience in their application. Purified natural products are required for complete spectro scopic identification and full characterization of new compo unds, for biological testing and for the supply of pharmaceuti cals, standards, and starting materials for synthetic work. Obtaining pure products from an extract can be a very long, te dious and expensive undertaking, involving many steps. Sometimes only minute amounts of the desired compounds are at hand and these entities may be labile. Thus it is an advantage to have access to as many different methods as possible in order to aid the isolation process. Although a certain amount of trial and error may be involved, nowadays there is the possibility of devising suitable rapid separation schemes by a judicious choice of the different techniques available.

Instrumental Thin-Layer Chromatography, Second Edition offers a comprehensive source of authoritative information on all aspects of instrumental thin-layer chromatography. The use of short, topic-focused chapters facilitates identifying information of immediate interest for familiar or emerging uses of thin-layer chromatography. The book gives those working in both academia and industry the opportunity to learn, refresh, or deepen their understanding of fundamental and instrumental aspects of thin-layer chromatography, as well as the tools to interpret and manage chromatographic data. The book serves as a practical consolidated guide to the selection of separation conditions and the use of auxiliary techniques. This fully updated new edition restores the contemporary character of the book for those involved in advancing the technology, analyzing data produced, or applying the technique to new application areas. Some chapters have been consolidated to make room for topics not covered in the first edition, reflecting general changes in the field of thin-layer chromatography, especially in effects-directed detection, convenient interfaces for advanced spectroscopic detection, and greater automation possibilities. This book is a valuable reference for anyone who needs to acquire fundamental and practical information to facilitate progress in research and management functions utilizing information acquired by thin-layer chromatography. Features individual chapters written by recognized authoritative and visionary experts in the field Provides an overview and focused treatment of a single topic Provides tables and diagrams with commonly used data to facilitate practical work, comparison of results, and decision-making Places modern developments in the research literature into a general context not always apparent to inexperienced users of the technique Offers comprehensive updates to all chapters Includes new chapters on instrument platforms, effects-directed detection, data analysis tools, small-scale and microfluidic planar separation systems, and applications to the separation of amino acids and peptides, the analysis of saccharides and lipids, and forensic analysis

Book Description
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has become the technique of choice to perform an accurate determination of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins and provitamin A carotenoids in foods, especially for routine work. An overview of main HPLC methods for the individual and simultaneous vitamin analysis in foods is here presented. All precautions indispensable for handling these analytes, easily susceptible to degradation, are described as well as problems connected with the sample preparation, chromatographic separation and detection. Difficulties related to the development of multivitamin methods are also assessed and the potentiality of the latest extraction and chromatographic detection techniques are highlighted.

Book Description
"The category of products known as dietary supplements covers a wide range of products including multivitamins, herbal supplements and energy drinks. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a common analytical technique for pharmaceuticals. This study presents an HPLC method for the quantitation of several ingredients in dietary supplements Lentra, Prolent, and Somni-TR. Photodetection by polydiacetylene is another quantitative method. Polydiacetylenes have two optical states, a "red" and a "blue" state, and an irreversible transition can be triggered from the blue to the red state by the binding of an analyte to the polymer. The potential usefulness of PDA lies in its ability to act as both receptor and transducer. In this study, attempts were made to synthesize several diacetylene monomers which could be used in PDA thin films or vesicles. These attempts included several different chain lengths and functional groups."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Description
There is a dramatic rise of novel drug use due to the increased popularity of so-called designer drugs. These synthetic drugs can be illegal in some countries, but legal in others and novel compounds unknown to drug chemistry emerge monthly. This thoughtfully constructed edited reference presents the main chromatographic methodologies and strategies used to discover and analyze novel designer drugs contained in diverse biological materials. The methods are based on molecular characteristics of the drugs belonging to each individual class of compounds, so it will be clear how the current methods are adaptable to future new drugs that appear in the market.
