Gent war fruher die Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Flandern und hat eine grossartige geschichtliche Vergangenheit. - Vom 14 bis zum 16 Jahrhundert war ihre Einfluss in Flandern sehr gross und liess sich auch bei den benachbarten Volkern fuhlen. - Mitten des 140 Jahrhunderts, zur Zeiten des Jacob van Artevelde (Denkmal am Freitagsmarkt) war ihre Jlacht so gross dass die Gesandten Englands und Frankreichs um ihre Bundesgenossenschaft in den gegenseitigen Kriegen baten. - Wahrend dieser Zeitlaufte war Gent hundert und funfzig Jahren lang die Vorfechterinn der communalen Freiheiten, und kannte damals schon, als Industriecentrum, die sozialen Uelbelstande welche die entstehende kapitalistische Production mit sich brachte.
