Book Description
Cosmopolitans... - it is reasonably easy to define what it means; it is increasingly the case that we come across them. But it may be rare to see reflections that are both, sociologically well informed and at the same time entertaining - a Turkish friend from Australia suggested to the author of the present notes to call it sociotainment... - though she admitted that she got the term from her husband from India... Sometimes it's easier to find oneself while being lost. And the present volume invites to get lost, offering the reader the opportunity to think about her and his place. These are notes: reflections (from an academic who considers himself also as politically aware and in some way active) that bring together the different dimensions of being carried away to rest in different places and positions.

Famine Diary
Author: Gerald Keegan
Publisher: Irish American Book Company
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
Gerald Keegan was one of the emigrants who left famine conditions in County Sligo, Ireland and made the long voyage across the Atlantic. He experienced firsthand the shocking conditions on Grosse Ile, conditions so shocking that the Canadian government of the day tried every way possible to keep the public from finding out about it. The dairy he kept was first published in Huntington, Quebec in 1895, but was censored by the government for being too frank an exposure of the injustices that were at the root of the emigration movement. Writer James Mangan has taken Gerald Keegan's Famine diary and edited it to make it more intelligible to readers who might not be familiar with the historical background of the mass emigration movement from Ireland in 1847. For this book, he also changed the language idiom into a more modern type of expression, and introduced a number of characters in order to fill out the historical background of the emigration movement. In doing this, every precaution was made to maintain the charming simplicity and frankness of the original author, Gerald Keegan. Today, we know about the cruelty of the Irish landlords, but life aboard the coffin ships is hardly documented and the ultimate fate of the emigrants is rarely adverted to. Keegan's dairy shows us the face of the famine dead. -- from Introduction.

Social Policy in Context
Author: Peter Herrmann
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 3944690192
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
Social policy is widely accepted as scientific discipline – and this includes that it accepts for itself another meaning of this status, one which is usually not considered: the subject is disciplined, i.e. regimented. One important point in this context is that social policy is focused and thereby forgets systematic economic determinants and the historical perspective on its own existence. The present book recalls some fundamental issues – such as the partial liberation of human decision making from extramundane powers – and as well as topics that are being discussed in contemporary settings. The volume brings different dimensions together in an insightful way and is a stimulating read for those who are ready to engage with the complexity of political questions, are looking for instruments for an analysis that reaches beyond “yesterday’s solutions for the problems we don’t really know anyway”.
