Book Description
The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has con ducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University since 1954. The purpose of the conference has been to gather to gether scientists and engineers from academic institutions, in dustry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. This volume, Advances in Deformation Processing, addresses the areas of Analytical Advances, Workability, Processing to Optimize Properties, Advanced Applications - Materials, and Advanced Applications - Processes. The dedicated assistance of Mr. Joseph Bernier of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the Sagamore Conference Proceedings is deeply appreciated. The support of Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University in p- paring the final manuscript is acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. A. E. Gorum, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated. Syracuse University Syracuse, New York The Editors vii Contents SESSION I INTRODUCTION A. E. Book Description
The turbine has many advantages over other prime movers for producing power. The first turbine used water as the working fluid and this principle is still used in hydro-electric power generation. The steam turbine was developed late in the nineteenth century and was first applied to marine propulsion by Parsons in 1897. Since that time it has become the most widely used prime mover in electricity generation and marine propulsion. The equipment required to generate steam is bulky however and it was realised that much more compact power plant could be designed if the hot gases used for steam generation could drive the turbine directly. Early attempts to produce gas turbines were unsuccessful for several reasons, one major problem being that materials with the capability of operating at sufficiently high stresses and temperatures were not available. Following the first experimental Whittle engine in 1937, the emphasis on the development of the gas turbine engine for aircraft propulsion during World War II changed this situation dramatically. Gas turbine powered civil aircraft entered airline service in the early 1950s and gas turbines also began to compete successfully in other fields. Apart from the aircraft market, they have been used widely in pumping sets for oil and gas transmission pipelines and peak load electricity generation. Use in warship propulsion is increasing and there is currently major activity, in the USA in particular, in developments for vehicular propulsion.

Book Description
The handbook provides design engineers with up-to-date information about the many aspects of forging including descriptions of important developments made more recently by industry and/or government. The handbook describes suitable measures for in-process quality control and quality assurance, summarizes relationships between forging practices and important mechanical properties and compares various forging devices to aid in equipment selection. Attention is also given to describing practices for relatively new materials and emerging forging practices. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
This new edition textbook provides comprehensive knowledge and insight into various aspects of manufacturing technology, processes, materials, tooling, and equipment. Its main objective is to introduce the grand spectrum of manufacturing technology to individuals who will be involved in the design and manufacturing of finished products and to provide them with basic information on manufacturing technologies. Manufacturing Technology: Materials, Processes, and Equipment, Second Edition, is written in a descriptive manner, where the emphasis is on the fundamentals of the process, its capabilities, typical applications, advantages, and limitations. Mathematical modeling and equations are used only when they enhance the basic understanding of the material dealt with. The book is a fundamental textbook that covers all the manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment used to convert the raw materials to a final product. It presents the materials used in manufacturing processes and covers the heat treatment processes, smelting of metals, and other technological processes such as casting, forming, powder metallurgy, joining processes, and surface technology. Manufacturing processes for polymers, ceramics, and composites are also covered. The book also covers surface technology, fundamentals of traditional and nontraditional machining processes, numerical control of machine tools, industrial robots and hexapods, additive manufacturing, and industry 4.0 technologies. The book is written specifically for undergraduates in industrial, manufacturing, mechanical, and materials engineering disciplines of the second to fourth levels to cover complete courses of manufacturing technology taught in engineering colleges and institutions all over the world. It also covers the needs of production and manufacturing engineers and technologists participating in related industries where it is expected to be part of their professional library. Additionally, the book can be used by students in other disciplines concerned with design and manufacturing, such as automotive and aerospace engineering.
