Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
"This manuscript reviews the applications of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to the determination of organic priority substances in the aquatic environment. The basic principles of SFE are explained and the design of a generic SFE instrument is discussed. Examples of SFE in the extraction of the major classes of priority substances, including polychlorinated biphenyls, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, total petroleum hydrocarbons, insecticides and herbicides, phenols, chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans, resin acids, and organotins, are described. Over 100 recent references in this topic are cited"--Abstract.

Supercritical Fluid Methods and Protocols
Author: John R. Williams
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1592590306
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
Over the last 15 years, there has been renewed interest in supercritical fluids owing to their unique properties and relatively low environmental impact. Greatest attention has been given to the extraction and separation of organic compounds. Supercritical fluids have also been successfully used for particle production, as reaction media, and for the destruction of toxic waste. Supercritical carbon dioxide has been the most widely used supercritical fluid, mainly because it is cheap, relatively nontoxic, and has convenient critical values. Supercritical fluids have also been used on analytical and preparative scales for many biological and other applications. Many papers have been published on the use of supercritical fluids. However, few have acted as a detailed instruction manual for those wanting to use the techniques for the first time. We anticipate that this Methods in Biotechnology volume, Supercritical Fluid Methods and Protocols will s- isfy the need for such a book. Every chapter has been written by experienced workers and should, if closely followed, enable workers with some or no previous experience of supercritical fluids to conduct experiments successfully at the first attempt.

Spectral Data for PCBs
Author: Tees
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781883400026
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 652
Book Description
PCBs have been produced commercially for a long time and for a variety of uses. However, their chemical and physical stability has been found to be responsible for the PCBs environmental contamination problem. The discovery of widespread environmental occurrence of PCBs and their apparent link to carcinogenesis drew public attention to the problem, leading to new legislation regulating PCBs. Although regulations and requirements differ from country to country, there is a common global analytical interest in determining their presence in the different matrices and in the environment. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive compilation of spectral data for the complete set of PCBs.

Analytical Supercritical Fluid Extraction
Author: Maria D. Luque de Castro
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642786731
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
Recent advances in analytical chemistry have turned it into a virtually unrecognizable science compared to a few decades ago, when it lagged behind other sciences and techniques. However, advances in analytical science have been far from universal: while innovations in instrumentation and data acquisition and processing systems have reached unprecedented levels thanks to parallel breakthroughs in computer science and chemo metrics, progress in preliminary operations has been much slower despite their importance to analytical results. Thus, such clear trends in analytical process development as automation and miniaturization have not reached preliminary operations to the same extent, even though this area is pro bably in the greatest need. Improvement in preliminary operations is thus an urgent goal of analytical chemistry on the verge of the twenty first century. Increased R&D endeavours and manufacture of commercially available automatic equipment for implementation of the wide variety of operations that separate the uncollected, unmeasured, untreated sample from the signal measuring step are thus crucial on account of the wide variability of such operations, which precludes development of all-purpose equipment, and the complexity of some, particularly relating to solid samples. Supercritical fluid extraction opens up interesting prospects in this context and is no doubt an effective approach to automatioI1 and mini aturization in the preliminary steps of the analytical process. The dramatic developments achieved in its short life are atypical in many respects.

Book Description
This activity will result in a commercialized version of a field-portable instrument for performing supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with on-line Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) detection. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) has developed an SFE field-portable method for quantitatively extracting organic pollutants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs], polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], total petroleum hydrocarbons [TPHs]) from soils and sludges under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding. FT-IR is a detector that can yield quantitative and compound-class information for organic pollutants and is excellent for survey uses, since virtually all organic compound classes can be monitored. A laboratory prototype SFE-FT-IR instrument has been developed at the EERC and the University of North Dakota (UND) Department of Chemistry. The commercial instrument will be field-portable (requiring only generator electricity) and able to extract and measure organic pollutants from soils and sludges, identify the compound classes present, and provide quantitative or semiquantitative results at detection limits relevant to regulatory needs (e.g., parts per million). The SFE-FT-IR approach is particularly advantageous for very hazardous samples (e.g., determination of organics in solids contaminated with radioactive components), since SFE-FT-IR analysis generates no waste solvents. The instrument will also be configured to allow collection of {open_quotes}positive{close_quotes} extracts for analysis by other confirmatory (e.g., gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy [GC-MS]) methods.
