ABSTRACT: Span wire traffic support systems provide a reasonable cost alternative to mast arm structures. Unfortunately failure of span wire systems is prevalent in high velocity winds. Previous research of the dual cable support mechanism indicates that this particular span wire assembly is not well suited for hurricane prone regions. Dual cable and single cable support systems were tested in high velocity winds, and results are compared to investigate the performance of both under severe wind loading. Additionally the force, drag, and lift coefficients of a 5 head traffic signal are determined and compared to previous research to determine if the current recommended drag coefficient is adequate for analysis of wind forces on a typical traffic signal.

ABSTRACT: The primary objective of this project was to identify which dual cable support systems provide the best potential for hurricane resistance. Along with hurricane resistance, the serviceability limit for each system was considered. Systems were evaluated using full-scale tests with the UF Hurricane Simulator. Thirty-three wind load tests were performed to measure signal rotations, cable tensions, and cable displacements. The data was analyzed to determine the effect of signal orientation, wind angle, hanger type, and signal material on system performance during high wind conditions. The results were used to calculate force coefficients for dual cable systems. The force coefficients may be applied to wind loads on traffic signals when designing intersections. Results showed that there is a significant difference in rotations and cable tension among the different support systems. The systems that tend to have greater rotation under relatively low wind loads also reduce the increase in cable tension experienced under high wind loads.

A study was recently completed examining the validity of design procedures used in calculating loads on poles supporting traffic signals suspended from untethered span-wires. First, current New York State Department of Transportation design procedures were examined for their appropriateness and compliance with AASHTO specifications. A traffic-signal pole was then instrumented with load cells and a wind-speed monitor. Loads transferred to the pole from the span-wire and associated wind speeds were recorded over several months. These data were compared with corresponding loads calculated using 1) methods specified by AASHTO and 2) current methods used by the Department. This report summarizes the study and its results.
