By increasing the incubation temperature from 37 C to 50 C, the 3-day assay could be reduced to 1 day without any loss of sensitivity in detection. Preliminary results from tests on unknown specimens gave rather encouraging results when compared to commercial enzyme immunoassay methods. The pick-up rate of hepatitis B surface antigen positive specimens demonstrated about 90 percent concurrence with commercial methods. False positives were seldom encountered. [Authors' abstract].

Testing and diagnosis of hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infection is the gateway for access to both prevention and treatment services, and is a crucial component of an effective response to the hepatitis epidemic.
