Book Description
A composite consisting of an aluminum alloy matrix and a graphite fiber reinforcement was developed with strengths exceeding the 'rule of mixture' strength of 101 ksi. The composite is not degraded by temperature to 550C or by thermal cycling from -193 to +500C. The importance of various processing techniques to the successful development of this composite and the effects of certain process variables on properties are discussed. (Author).

Book Description
The fabrication of composite panels and cylinders from commercially available aluminum-graphite composite wire was studied. Seven 3 x 3 x 0.1 inch panels of both uniaxial and cross-ply configurations were made and their mechanical properties were measured. Panels with aluminum-graphite faces, pure aluminum faces, and titanium faces were made. Two 12 x 12 x 0.05 inch titanium clad panels were submitted to AMMRC for evaluation. High strengths were achieved in uniaxial panels but degradation was observed in cross-ply panels. Metallographic studies showed that the degradation in cross-ply panels was probably due to fiber misalignment. Studies were conducted on two possible techniques for making cylindrical shapes. The wrapping of aluminum-graphite composite wire (1) around a mandrel, and (2) winding surface treated graphite yarn on a mandrel at room temperature under purified argon followed by vacuum impregnation with liquid aluminum. The work showed both techniques to be promising. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
Composite Materials, Volume 4: Metallic Matrix Components provides an in-depth report and a reference on the technology of metal-matrix composites. The book starts by giving an introduction to metal-matrix composites, and by discussing the principal metal-laminate fabrication methods, the properties of metal laminates, and materials engineering of laminated-metal composites for specific applications. The text also describes the technology in eutectic superalloys of nickel and cobalt; nickel alloys reinforced with alpha-Al2O3 filaments; and the problems and progress encountered in developing wire-reinforced superalloys. The fiber-reinforced titanium alloys; the development of metal-matrix composites reinforced with high-modulus graphite fibers; as well as the development, the physical and mechanical properties, and the engineering considerations for the use of boron-aluminum are also encompassed. Materials scientists and engineers will find the book invaluable.

Book Description
EEN DEVELOPED FOR MAKING COMPOSITE WIRE FROM COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MULTIFIBER GRAPHITE YARNS. Composite wire has been made from Thornel 50 infiltrated with A13, 220 and 6061 alloys. Aluminum alloy-graphite composite shapes have been successfully fabricated by hot-pressing the composite wire. Mechanical testing of both the composite wire and hot-pressed bars includes longitudinal and transverse tensile, flexural and compressive strengths and elastic modulus. The longitudinal tensile strength and elastic modulus of both the composite wire and hot-pressed bars approximated rule of mixtures behavior. Examination of the microstructure indicates that better transverse strength may be achieved through refinement of the matrix grain size, elimination of continuous networks of intermetallic compounds, and homogenization of the alloy constituents of the matrix. Book Description
Aluminium (Al) is a metal of great importance because of its excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, good reflectivity, and very good recycling characteristics. The properties of heat-treatable Al-alloys can be further enhanced by the inclusion of a reinforcing phase that increases the mechanical properties of the overall composite. This book is a comprehensive guide on the different types of aluminum alloys and the new advances that have been made in developing and manufacturing aluminum alloys and composites. This text provides a comprehensive overview of the processing, formability, and chemical composition of aluminum alloys and composites. Part One is focused on evaluating the types and properties of advanced aluminum alloys and composites, while Part Two explores characterization. The advantage of this book is that it provides a detailed review of major advances that have occurred in the development and application of aluminum alloys and composites while outlining a development strategy for these materials.

Book Description
This volume is a valuable reference work for the student and the practising engineer in the chemical, pharmaceutical, minerals, food, plastics, paper and metallurgical industries. The second edition of this successful text has been thoroughly rewritten and updated. Based on the long running post-experience course produced by the University of Bradford, in association with the Institution of Chemical Engineers, it covers all aspects of mixing, from fundamentals through to design procedures in single and multi-phase systems. Experts from both industry and academia have contributed to this work giving both a theoretical practical approach. It covers dry and wet powders, single and two-phase liquids, solid/liquid and gas/liquid systems. The range of mixers available for such diverse duties is dealt with, including tumbler mixers for powders, mechanically agitated vessels, in-line continuous mixers and jet mixers. Coverage is given of the range of mixing objectives, varying from achieving product uniformity to obtaining optimum conditions for mass transfer and chemical reactions.
