Book Description
The contributions in this volume reflect not only the growing understanding of the underlying mechanisms controlling the various reactions in laser surface processing, but also the potential of several developing applications of direct processing. The most notable trend in the field currently is the technique of laser ablation, which is reported in almost a quarter of the papers in this volume. Whilst by no means a new phenomenon, attention has until recent years remained in the area of lithography and UV-sensitive materials. The growth in interest lies in the use of the technique to grow multi-component thin films and multi-layers. A number of papers on the topic of process diagnostics and in-situ measurements are also included. The theme of these annual meetings is centred around the physical and chemical modification of thin films and surfaces induced by the action of photon, ion, neutral, or electron beams in a variety of environments. Consequently these proceedings provide a comprehensive and unified presentation of the latest developments in this field.

Book Description
Laser Processing and Chemistry gives an overview of the fundamentals and applications of laser-matter interactions, in particular with regard to laser material processing. Special attention is given to laser-induced physical and chemical processes at gas-solid, liquid-solid, and solid-solid interfaces. Starting with the background physics, the book proceeds to examine applications of laser techniques in micro-machining, and the patterning, coating, and modification of material surfaces. This fourth edition has been revised and enlarged to cover new topics such as 3D microfabrication, advances in nanotechnology, ultrafast laser technology and laser chemical processing (LCP). Graduate students, physicists, chemists, engineers, and manufacturers alike will find this book an invaluable reference work on laser processing.

Book Description
Synthesis of nonequilibrium metallic phases has been an area of great interest to the materials processing community since early 1960. Inherent rapid cooling rates in laser processing are being used to engineer non-equilibrium microstructures which cannot be rivaled by other processes. This lecture will discuss the phenomena involved and its application in designing materials with tailored properties. What is non-equilibrium Synthesis? This is a synthesis method to produce binary or higher order materials where kinetics of the pro cess affects the transport of the constituent elements during phase transformation resulting in a composition or crystallographic configuration which is different from what is observed when the elements arranges themselves with the lowest possible Gibbs Free energy, which is the equilibrium condition. Figure 1 illustrates the phenomena. Phase diagram under equilibrium condition is illustrated by the solid line whereas the no-equilibrium phase diagram is represented by the dotted line. One can observe the shrinkage of the phase field under non-equilibrium condition. Any alloy composition between the solidus lines of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagram will be a non equilibrium alloys with extended solid solution.

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book Description
Because of its capacity for continuous development and flexibility of use, the laser has become a mainstream manufacturing tool in many industrial sectors. This timely book relays the state-of-the-art in laser materials processing technology and applications and likely advances to be made from current research taking place around the world. The book also promotes appreciation for laser applications in a variety of industrial sectors. After two introductory chapters, the book reviews the main areas of laser processing. Starting with laser cutting and machining, the book discusses laser welding, annealing and hardening. It then considers surface treatment, coating and materials deposition as well as other engineering techniques such as peening and net-shape engineering, before discussing laser micro and nano-fabrication techniques. The book concludes by looking at modelling and process control. With its distinguished editorial team and contributions from renowned researchers working in every corner of the globe, Advances in laser materials processing provides a comprehensive yet detailed coverage of the many topics that comprise the field of laser materials processing. It provides a reference source for the scientists and engineers in such areas as metals processing and microelectronics, as well those conducting laser materials processing research in either academia or industry. A comprehensive practitioner guide and reference work explaining state-of-the-art laser processing technologies in manufacturing and other disciplines Explores the challenges, potential and future directions through the continuous development of new, application-specific lasers in materials processing Discusses coatings and material deposition with lasers with including the production of coatings by laser-assisted processes, laser direct metal deposition and laser induced forward transfer (LIFT)

Book Description
Micro and Nanoscale Laser Processing of Hard Brittle Materials examines general laser-material interactions within this type of material, focusing on the nanoprocessing technologies that these phenomena have given rise to. Sections cover laser machining, healing, recovery, sintering, surface modification, texturing and microstructuring. These technologies all benefit from the characteristics of laser processing, its highly localized heating ability, and its well-defined optical properties. The book also describes frontier applications of the developed technologies, thus further emphasizing the possibility of processing hard brittle materials into complex structures with functional surfaces at both the micro and nanoscale. Provides readers with a solid understanding of laser-material interactions Helps readers choose suitable laser parameters for processing hard brittle materials Demonstrates how micro and nanoscale laser processing can be used to machine brittle materials without fracture

Book Description
The thesis describes growth and characterization of nitride-based quantum well structures for laser diodes emitting in the wavelength range between 400 nm and 450 nm. In order optimize the epitaxial growth process by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy and thus the performance of the laser diode structures, the material properties of the indium gallium nitride (InGaN) active region were correlated with device characteristics. By analyzing optically pumpable laser structures in a first step, growth conditions and growth schemes were revealed that prevent 3D growth and the formation of additional defects in the active region. In the next step, using growth parameter that provide a high material gain broad area current injection laser diodes emitting around 400 nm were realized on sapphire substrate. These devices feature threshold current densities in the range of 6 kA/cm² in pulsed operation. For laser diodes emitting at longer wavelengths, the heterostructure layout was optimized by comparing optical pumping results with device simulation. Using a layer sequence with increased modal gain, first broad area current injection laser diodes emitting around 440 nm were demonstrated. The structures were grown on low defect density bulk GaN substrates and exhibit threshold current densities of ~10 kA/cm² in pulsed operation. On the basis of these results further device and process development was started aiming for ridge waveguide laser structures operating continuous wave in the wavelength range between 400 and 450 nm.
