Pour garantir la non-déterioration du moteur on préconise des vidanges périodiques sans connaissance précise de l'état réel de vieillissement du lubrifiant. Aujourd'hui, afin d'assurer une marge de sécurité suffisante en clientèle, les intervalles de vidange sont déterminés, entre autres, à partir d'essais d'endurance sur les véhicules équipés des moteurs les plus critiques et dans les conditions de roulage les plus sévères. Au moment de la vidange, l'huile peut encore avoir un potentiel de fonctionnalité non négligeable. Il est donc indispensable de connaître avec précision l'état de dégradation du lubrifiant afin d'alléger la maintenance et réduire les coûts d'entretien. Cette étude met en évidence plusieurs critères influents majeurs du processus de vieillissement des huiles en service à savoir la viscosité, l'acidité, la basicité, la réserve antioxydante et l'influence de la dilution du carburant. Les actions de progrès envisagées, concernant l'évolution de ces critères en vue d'une aide à la conception d'un indicateur de vidange, sont respectivement le contrôle de la consommation des additifs de viscosité, la mise au point d'une méthode précise et fiable de mesure de l'oxydation (PAI), la détermination d'un seuil minimal de réserve de base pour les futures huiles bas taux de cendres, l'établissement d'un nouveau critère de maintenance allégée issus de la détermination de la réserve antioxydante et finalement l'acceptation d'un pourcentage maximum de dilution de carburant comme critère de vidange.Les livrables proposés sont une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes de vieillissement avec l'influence des huiles de base Gr IV sur les huiles minérales, l'identification de critères de vidange à faire progresser afin de permettre leur adaptation sur véhicule et leur validation sur les huiles de nouvelle génération.
