Being shipwrecked on an idyllic deserted island for reality TV show Stranded sounded blissful. Until I discovered my Man Friday for the week was Jared Malone (aka he-who-broke-my-heart!). I mean, of course I'll be fine. I don't feel anything for him anymore. Female viewers might swoon over Jared's tanned gorgeousness, but I know he's just an arrogant, overmuscled heartbreaker! The cameras are rolling, so I'm off to the beach to face Jared. I just hope I look okay in this bikini!

Book Description
'Island Genres, Genre Islands' moves the debate about literature and place onto new ground by exploring the island settings of bestsellers. Through a focus on four key genres—crime fiction, thrillers, popular romance fiction, and fantasy fiction—Crane and Fletcher show that genre is fundamental to both the textual representation of real and imagined islands and to actual knowledges and experiences of islands. The book offers broad, comparative readings of the significance of islandness in each of the four genres as well as detailed case studies of major authors and texts. These include chapters on Agatha’s Christie’s islands, the role of the island in ‘Bondspace,’ the romantic islophilia of Nora Roberts’s Three Sisters Island series, and the archipelagic geography of Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea. Crane and Fletcher’s book will appeal to specialists in literary studies and cultural geography, as well as in island studies.

Myron Glucksman demonstrates a methodical approach toward understanding the meaning of dreams, and how to use that information for the purpose of promoting change. The book is meant for both dreamers and therapists who are interested in working with dreams. Examples are given throughout to emphasize how dreams can be understood to help the dreamer bring about internal and external change and how dreams give a greater awareness of our inner selves, including our deepest feelings, conflicts, wishes and fears. Dreaming is written in clear, understandable language with a minimum of psychological jargon. Technical terms are explained and illustrated. Although it includes theoretical material, the emphasis is on clinically relevant issues. The information it provides can be integrated into various therapeutic modalities (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral) as well as diverse styles of clinical work.

After all, she worked hard for her success...and it's not like now that she has a child she has to buy a minivan, wear Mom Jeans, and give up her career! Right? Despite more than a few pounds of baby weight still left to lose, Clare dons her Miss Piggy Pants and returns to work. She plans a swanky Sweet Sixteen party, pulls off a million-dollar golf outing, has to come to terms with her mother's breast cancer, and is left so exhausted that she can't remember her ATM card's pin number. Then, after another meeting runs late, and she misses another one of her daughter's milestones, Clare allows herself to examine an alternate choice: staying home. "Lipinski's snappy dialogue and acerbic wit are so engaging, you don't need a minivan to enjoy this ride." –Jen Lancaster, New York Times bestselling author

Book Description
American Dreaming chronicles in rich detail the struggles of immigrants who have fled troubled homelands in search of a better life in the United States, only to be marginalized by the society that they hoped would embrace them. Sarah Mahler draws from her experiences living among undocumented Salvadoran and South American immigrants in a Long Island suburb of Manhattan. In moving interviews they describe their disillusionment with life in the United States but blame themselves individually or as a whole for their lack of economic success and not the greater society. As she explores the reasons behind this outlook, the author argues that marginalization fosters antagonism within ethnic groups while undermining the ethnic solidarity emphasized by many scholars of immigration. Mahler's investigation leads to conditions that often bar immigrants from success and that they cannot control, such as residential segregation, job exploitation, language and legal barriers, prejudice and outright hostility from their suburban neighbors. Some immigrants earn surplus income by using private cars as taxis, subletting space in apartments to lower rent burdens, and filling out legal forms and applications--in essence generating institutions largely parallel to those of the mainstream society whereby only a small group of entrepreneurs can profit. By exacting a price for what used to be acts of reciprocal good will in the homeland, these entrepreneurs leave people who had expected to be exploited by "Americans" feeling victimized by their own.
